MBA candidate at Berkeley Haas. Previously worked on distributed systems at TikTok and AWS. Most energized by zero-to-one problems and products people actually use. ## Work Experience ### Software Engineer @ Meta Jan 2024 – Present | Menlo Park, CA Building generative AI products for WhatsApp's user-facing chat experiences powered by LLMs ### Software Engineer @ TikTok Jan 2022 – Jan 2024 | San Francisco Bay Area Worked in the Data Access team, designing and developing systems to handle the next phase of growth of TikTok's business and ensuring high stability and performance. ### Software Development Engineer @ Amazon Web Services (AWS) Jan 2021 – Jan 2022 | Seattle, Washington, United States Returned to the Amazon Aurora team to help build the next generation databases for the cloud. ### Software Development Engineer Intern @ Amazon Web Services (AWS) Jan 2020 – Jan 2020 Worked on Aurora, a MySQL and PostgreSQL-compatible relational database built for the cloud. ### Research Assistant @ The University of British Columbia Jan 2020 – Jan 2020 | Vancouver, Canada Area Processing embedding layers involves the most memory-intensive steps in the inference of recommender systems that are used by platforms such as Facebook to make suggestions to their users. In this project, I am using Data Processing Units to increase the throughput of embedding operations in the inference of a recommender system. ### NSERC USRA Research Fellow @ The University of British Columbia Jan 2020 – Jan 2020 | Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada Prostate cancer (PCa) is the most common cancer diagnosed in Canadian men, with about 25,000 new cases per year. The gold standard for PCa diagnosis and prognosis is the ultrasound (US)-guided needle biopsy with pathologic grading. The biopsy procedure is not patient-specific; instead, it involves taking "blind" biopsy cores, leading to frequent re-biopsy or overdiagnosis of insignificant cancer. There is an acute need for patient-specific targeting techniques that have a higher chance of detecting early aggressive PCa. In this project, I am developing a turnkey system, where subtle variations of backscattered US signals from a tissue location over a short period, i.e., temporal enhanced US, are used to detect the physical properties of the underlying tissue using a machine-learning framework. In other words, the system enables the physician to detect the points in the prostate that need biopsy in real-time. ### Software Engineer Intern @ Intel Corporation Jan 2019 – Jan 2020 | Vancouver, Canada Area Working in the non-volatile solutions group, developing and testing Intel's new line of Solid State Drives. • Saved 1000+ hours of manual analysis annually through the development of a web crawler that scrapes the web for directories containing the regression test data and automate the performance data gathering • Streamlined firmware debugging process by designing and developing an API in C that gathers and provides 10x assert data to firmware engineers • Reduced 20% of test run-time by restructuring SSD system tests, saving 2000+ hours annually ### Computer Science Teaching Assistant @ The University of British Columbia Jan 2019 – Jan 2019 | Vancouver, Canada Area Led sessions for CPSC 221 (Algorithms and Data Structures) and CPSC 261 (Computer Systems). • Solved problems for 40+ students during tutorials to assist them in applying the course's core principles • Led weekly lab sessions and office hours to aid students in understanding key course concepts ### Developer Analyst Intern @ TELUS Jan 2018 – Jan 2018 | Vancouver, Canada Worked on the fulfillment-consumer team, aiding the roll-out of the PureFibre network across Canada. • Reduced the database administration overhead by spearheading a Proof of Concept of a data aggregation solution for 10+ databases, and presenting a comprehensive report to executives • Streamlined project monitoring, changes, and submissions for 50+ backend engineers by building a regularly used project management web application using JavaScript, JQuery, HTML, CSS, and JQL • Improved the system resiliency and simplicity of telus.com's backend server by standardizing system calls for the existing data-flow and developing a middleware between the current protocol calls ### Owner @ Ototutor.com Jan 2015 – Jan 2015 | Vancouver, Canada Area Ototutor is an education company focusing on providing affordable tutoring services to students. • Managed 160+ hours of effective tutoring services every month to help K-12 students improve their grades by one letter grade on average by sourcing, hiring and training 15 new top-notch tutors annually • Generated over $100,000 of annual revenue by building a dedicated marketing and operations team ## Education ### Master of Business Administration - MBA University of California, Berkeley, Haas School of Business ### Bachelor of Applied Science - BASc in Computer Engineering The University of British Columbia ### Minor in Commerce UBC Sauder School of Business ### International Baccalaureate Certificate West Vancouver Secondary School ## Contact & Social - LinkedIn: https://linkedin.com/in/abbas-k - Portfolio: https://www.abbask.com/ --- Source: https://flows.cv/abbaskashanipour JSON Resume: https://flows.cv/abbaskashanipour/resume.json Last updated: 2026-03-29
