# Alex Kumar > Duke New Grad MS + BS in CS Location: New York, New York, United States Profile: https://flows.cv/alexkumar Passionate about using the power of computing to make people's lives easier and more interesting! Recently graduated with my MS in CS from Duke University where I had many great opportunities to work on projects that combined machine learning, software development, and data analysis. This included: - Reinforcement learning to optimize social & transportation networks in a custom built simulation - Finetuning foundation models to propose new Anti-CRISPR proteins; testing the results with AlphaFold - Experimenting with learned indicies for databases to improve query efficiency - Scraping, processing, and analyzing news coverage; visualizing semantic drift between different publications At my most recent internship with the Department of Transportation, I got the opportunity to work on computer vision projects such as analyzing the efficacy of the new Move Over, Slow Down laws. I also got to meet and work with some amazing transportation planners, partially motivating my final Masters project! My core competencies include machine learning, natural language processing, computer vision, data analysis, and data visualization, (working mostly in Python, R, and C++). I am eager to learn new skills and technologies, and to collaborate with diverse and interdisciplinary teams to solve real-world problems! ## Work Experience ### Software Engineer @ Stork Labs Jan 2024 – Jan 2026 | New York, New York, United States ### Machine Learning Intern @ U.S. DOT Volpe National Transportation Systems Center Jan 2023 – Jan 2023 | Boston, Massachusetts, United States Computer Vision and Data Analysis: Conducted a code review of a machine learning app to measure the efficacy of new Move Over Slow Down laws. I utilized TensorFlow and Python scripts to improve the data preprocessing and data pipeline for third-party use. I also helped coordinate work between team members in Academica, state Traffic Management Centers, and the DoT. ### Data Analytics and Visualization Intern @ Wilson Center for Science and Justice at Duke Law Jan 2022 – Jan 2023 | Durham, North Carolina, United States Data analysis and visualization: Analyzed and built a web dashboard using data collected from the plea bargaining process in Berkshire, MA. As plea agreements are under-studied but are 90-95% of all case dispositions, this work is vital to shedding light on a huge obfuscated section of our legal system. I worked to gain data-driven insight and visualize disparities by defendant demographics, reveal charge and sentencing patterns, and track judge severity. Currently working to create a dashboard framework in javascript that can be used by any county to generate their own plea-tracking dashboard! ### Python Software Development Intern @ Samuel DuBois Cook Center on Social Equity at Duke University Jan 2022 – Jan 2022 | Durham, North Carolina, United States NLP and webscraping: Built Google Trends and LinkedIn webscrapers, collecting time-series keyword data and business demographic data. This data is being used to find correlations between the size of Paycheck Protection Program loans given before and after the death of George Floyd by race of business owners and the financial institution issuing the loan. ### Student Machine Learning Researcher @ Duke University Energy Initiative Jan 2021 – Jan 2022 | Durham, North Carolina, United States Computer vision and synthetic data generation: Trained GAN model to generate synthetic, labeled satellite imagery, blended style transfer. This was used to augment a wind turbine image training dataset collected from Google Earth. This method of artificially generating new training imagery increased our object detection model's average precision by 22%. The work of detecting and mapping energy infrastructure provides vital information for energy planning. ## Education ### Master of Science - MS in Computer Science Duke University Jan 2023 – Jan 2024 ### Bachelor of Science - BS in Computer Science Duke University Jan 2019 – Jan 2023 ### Southeast High School Jan 2015 – Jan 2019 ## Contact & Social - LinkedIn: https://linkedin.com/in/alex-kumar00 --- Source: https://flows.cv/alexkumar JSON Resume: https://flows.cv/alexkumar/resume.json Last updated: 2026-03-21
