# Ali Nowraiz Khan > Software Engineer at eBay Location: San Francisco Bay Area, United States Profile: https://flows.cv/alinowraizkhan When I first used a computer, I wondered what made it possible to do something for a user. What makes a computer "compute" things using pulses of electricity purely. Then I was introduced to an alien notion known as Programming. Although it partly answered my original curiosity, I started coding in BASIC programming language. Digging deeper, I was fascinated by the things one can do given a simple programming language. Considering how exciting I found problem-solving using computers, I decided to pursue Computer Science in my life. It has been a long journey. From making a calculator in Visual Basic without a zero because it was difficult for me to handle to pursuing a graduate degree in Computer Science, I learned how different domains of computer science are ubiquitous in our daily life. I mastered the discipline of computer programming and its various tools and techniques that are being used to solve novel problems in Software Design and Security today. Towards the end of my undergraduate degree, I started pursuing my research interests as opposed to the engineering ones to further my impact on the research community. I worked on several short projects in Program Analysis and Computer Security and Machine Learning. Given the realization of skills in the undergraduate program, the research I was doing was more impactful and interesting than ever. Thereby, I decided to join the MS program at UCR. For the last few years, I have been working as a Graduate Student Researcher at UCR on projects involving the applications of Deep Learning in Computer and Systems Security. Recently, I have gained interest in Reinforcement Learning. I am fascinated by the recent advances in RL and look forward to learn more and apply RL to solve real-world research problems in different domains.
