# Angela Ekstrand > Software Engineer and Group Manager at Sonoma Technology, Inc. Location: Berkeley, California, United States Profile: https://flows.cv/angelaekstrand I'm a volcano researcher turned air quality scientist turned software engineer. What I'm passionate about is finding solutions for storing, transforming, and querying complex data, especially data related to science or to public health interests. ## Work Experience ### Group Manager @ Sonoma Technology, Inc. Jan 2021 – Present ### Task Manager @ Sonoma Technology, Inc. Jan 2020 – Present ### Software Engineer @ Sonoma Technology, Inc. Jan 2016 – Present ### Team Lead @ Sonoma Technology, Inc. Jan 2020 – Jan 2021 ### Air Quality Scientist @ Sonoma Technology, Inc. Jan 2012 – Jan 2016 At Sonoma Technology, I use my skills in GIS, Python, and data analysis to help tackle a range of air quality problems. I am beginning to incorporate more R and SQL into my work. My duties include: • Monitoring data ingest and conducting data quality control for field projects • Organizing, conducting quality control, analyzing, and displaying data for analysis-based projects, including public health (exposure) projects • Mapping and analyzing geospatial data for many projects, in particular network assessment projects. ### Research Assistant @ University of Alaska Fairbanks Jan 2009 – Jan 2012 | Fairbanks, Alaska I completed my Master's thesis work at the University of Alaska Fairbanks in May 2012. My thesis was titled "A Multi-Sensor Approach to Determining Volcanic Plume Heights in the North Pacific." This work involved comparison of multiple height determination methods to assess their accuracy for multiple recent eruptions in the North Pacific. My work has prompted changes in how the remote sensing group at Alaska Volcano Observatory will determine and report volcanic plume heights during an active eruption, and more accurate heights will lead to more accurate forecasting of volcanic cloud motion. I have enjoyed the applied aspect of this research, and the fact that my work has the potential to have a positive impact on communities during a volcanic crisis. • Participated in daily satellite volcano monitoring duties for Alaska Volcano Observatory (AVO), including identification of thermal, ash, and steam features, primarily utilizing AVHRR and MODIS satellite data • Scheduled daily satellite monitoring shifts each month for AVO remote sensing (January 2010-October 2011) • Attended annual coordination and planning meeting of all three cooperative agencies of AVO • Presented individual and collaborative research work at science conferences (see attached list of publications) • Produced journal articles based on thesis research (see attached list of publications) ### Teaching Assistant @ University of Alaska Fairbanks Jan 2008 – Jan 2009 | Fairbanks, Alaska • Taught laboratory class associated with introductory “Volcanoes, Glaciers, and Earthquakes” lecture class • Created syllabus with laboratory guidelines • Presented necessary material at the beginning of each weekly lab class, including supplementary lecture material • Set up experiments and exercises for each weekly lab class • Graded assignments for each weekly lab class, as well as quizzes and tests for some lecture modules • Helped design some test questions for volcanoes lecture module • Lead the creation of a new assignment requiring students to apply classroom concepts from each module to real world events • Offered extra TA sessions to help improve student scores on tests and quizzes, and generated measurable results. ### Teaching Assistant @ Beloit College Jan 2007 – Jan 2007 | Beloit, Wisconsin • Assisted in labs and on field trips for introductory “Environmental Geology and Geological Hazards” class • Held a weekly evening TA session to assist in lab homework ## Education ### Master of Science (M.S.) in Geophysics University of Alaska Fairbanks ### Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Geology/Earth Science, General Beloit College ## Contact & Social - LinkedIn: https://linkedin.com/in/angela-ekstrand-4974104b --- Source: https://flows.cv/angelaekstrand JSON Resume: https://flows.cv/angelaekstrand/resume.json Last updated: 2026-04-10
