University Rover Challenge (URC) is an activity sponsored by the Mars Society, starting in 2007. We are building an autonomous vehicle capable of maneuvering in harsh terrain. The vehicle houses scientific instruments to perform onboard testing of a soil sample. We are studying ROS (Robot Operating System) to perform autonomous navigation with obstacle avoidance. This project uses a raspberry-pi and utilizes Python in tangent with existing ROS libraries to implement autonomous navigation. This is done via onboard sensor data from GPS signaling, a computer webcam, and other peripherals.
This project can lead into future collaboration among various departments in the College and the University to participate in the URC. To conclude this project, we will present at the Annual Meeting of Utah NASA Space Grant Consortium, held in early May 2022.
