Early engineer that helped build out Quip's product and infrastructure.
Key contributions:
• Led a major project to rewrite the spreadsheets FE and BE to support 1M cells. Owned the initial backend design and prototype, and was eventually the TL of a team of six to take the rewrite to launch.
• Conceived and led an initiative to redefine the ID format of sections, in order to reduce complexity and remove the largest source of bugs in the document saving pipeline.
• Designed and implemented a rewrite of the background syncing system. Primary goals were to reduce db cpu and iops by reducing syncing load, and to create a system that is extensible and easy to reason about.
• Shipped an assortment of product features, including granular sharing and account switching.
• Led process improvements around area ownership and peer reviews. Organized lightning talks, did formal and informal mentorship, wrote lots of documentation, and other work to scale up the engineering team.
Quip was acquired by Salesforce in August 2016.
