# Ben Hannel > Senior Software Engineer at Snowflake Location: Seattle, Washington, United States Profile: https://flows.cv/benhannel ## Work Experience ### Senior Software Engineer @ Snowflake Jan 2023 – Present | San Mateo, California, United States I am working on the execution platform team, building a high performance database engine in C++. ### Software Engineer @ Rockset Jan 2019 – Jan 2023 | San Mateo, California, United States Building high performance distributed systems in C++. I work on: - The SQL compiler to generate a distributed execution plan - The execution framework to run queries on terabytes of data in milliseconds More specifically, I have: - Improved scan performance 10x via vectorization to improve cache locality and reduce branch mispredictions - Built a partitioning scheme for our columnar store to improve on disk locality for range queries - Improve backend visibility and observability ### Software Engineering Intern @ Rockset Jan 2019 – Jan 2019 | San Mateo My main project was to create a geographic index based on the RocksDB storage engine. It accelerated queries involving searching for latitude/longitude points near a point or in a region. ### Research Assistant @ Stanford University Jan 2018 – Jan 2019 Applying machine learning to networks, specifically a network of 1.1 million financial transactions, to compute embeddings for nodes in the network and predict growth. Embedding dynamic graphs in low dimensional spaces has applications to finance, medicine, social graphs, etc. Under Jure Leskovic’s group, the Stanford Network Analysis Project. ### Software Engineering Intern @ Facebook Jan 2018 – Jan 2018 | Menlo Park Improved usability of an internal data intelligence tool. This including building a reusable UI element with a nontrivial interface in React. I took on another project to improve backend efficiency because I believed it was higher impact. ### Founder @ EVTripPlanner Jan 2013 – Jan 2018 | Thousand Oaks I built a company that has planned over 5,000,000 efficient routes for Tesla drivers. I built physics based models of the cars to predict energy usage, and improved the models by analyzing user data. I created a novel graph transformation algorithm to route users through a constrained charger network. Acquired in 2018. ### Volunteer Engineer @ Venligboerne Jan 2017 – Jan 2017 | Copenhagen Area, Denmark Designed, developed, and deployed a social app (React Native, Firebase) to help Venligboerne, an organization which assists refugees in Denmark, better coordinate and connect people. The app featured searching, sorting, and mapping capabilities. ### Intern @ Tesla Motors Jan 2015 – Jan 2015 | Palo Alto Tesla reached out to me for an internship after my senior year of high school because they admired my company, EVTripPlanner.com. I worked on the destination charger team translating, optimizing, and documenting an energy prediction model, which I then integrated into a web application. ## Education ### Master's degree in Computer Science Stanford University Jan 2019 – Jan 2020 ### Bachelor's degree in Computer Science Stanford University Jan 2015 – Jan 2019 ## Contact & Social - LinkedIn: https://linkedin.com/in/ben-hannel-383356112 --- Source: https://flows.cv/benhannel JSON Resume: https://flows.cv/benhannel/resume.json Last updated: 2026-03-22
