I started as the head of the programming and electronics department which we would later rename simply the “systems” department. During my three years in the team I was in charge of programming the manual and the autonomous mode in the robot—I chose to use Java instead of LabVIEW because of the finer control it enables—and connecting the sensors, motors, and piezoelectric valves. In my third year—which was my senior year of high school—I was also appointed to be team captain. Seeing that college was just around the corner I considered leaving a legacy for the future members of the team, I had to leave a self-sustainable system in the systems department. So I created and documented a Java library to facilitate the programming process. Some of the functions in the library included functions to make the robot move a specific number of meters given an encoder object, functions to rotate the robot at a certain angle given a gyroscope object, and functions to autonomously move the robot in a straight line using a combination of gyroscopes, encoders, and a PID controller.
