# Boyd Kane > Technical Alignment Research Location: Berkeley, California, United States Profile: https://flows.cv/boyd Busy solving real-world problems with code and robotics. Interested in using code as a tool to provide value. Not interested in web development/react/typescript jobs. ## Work Experience ### Research Fellowship @ MATS Research Jan 2026 – Present | Berkeley, California, United States ### Embedded Software Engineer @ CubeSpace ADCS Jan 2024 – Present | Stellenbosch, Western Cape, South Africa At CubeSpace as an Embedded Software Engineer, I work on the team that develops the control algorithms and embedded software to rotate satellites in orbit. ### Master's in Computer Science @ Stellenbosch University Jan 2023 – Jan 2023 | Cape Town, Western Cape, South Africa I completed my Master's in Computer Science through Stellenbosch University. My thesis extended the work done in my Honours year and as such I was able to complete my thesis in 9 months. I used a custom built set of gloves to measure fingertip acceleration which was processed by a machine learning algorithm, allowing the user to "type" by making gestures with their hands. ### Honours student @ Stellenbosch University Jan 2022 – Jan 2022 At Stellenbosch University I completed my Bachelor's of Science (Honours) degree in Computer Science with a focus on machine learning, robotics, and artificial intelligence. I graduated cum laude. ### Software Engineer @ Amazon Web Services (AWS) Jan 2021 – Jan 2022 While working full time as a Software Development Engineer Intern at AWS in Cape Town, I was given a project for the EC2 internal diagnostics and tooling team. This project would improve the interface that AWS developers use to root-cause problems or to investigate concerns. It involved independent exploration of the available options, discussing the merits of potential solutions with AWS software engineers, and implementing the various components of the solution before peer review and deployment. Technologies involved include React, Typescript, Kotlin, as well as internal build & deployment tooling. ### Student @ University of Cape Town Jan 2019 – Jan 2021 | Cape Town Area, South Africa At UCT I completed my Bachelor of Science in Mathematical Statistics and Computer Science. ### Software Engineer @ Amazon Web Services (AWS) Jan 2020 – Jan 2021 | City of Cape Town, Western Cape, South Africa While with AWS I was part of the team that builds internal tooling used for diagnostics and log tracing, all at the massive scale and in the distributed nature required by AWS EC2. My three month long project dramatically improved the experience of all teams in EC2 trying to discover the root cause to infrequent problems in their services. My team, and those who would use the improvements I developed, were excited by what this will allow them to do in the future. They appreciated my drive, eagerness to learn, and ability to research and develop a solution without explicit step-by-step instructions. ### Data Visualisation Intern @ The Sun Exchange Jan 2019 – Jan 2020 | Cape Town, Western Cape, South Africa While with the Sun Exchange, I was in charge of collecting, cleaning and visualising historical solar production measurements in order to generate a individualised solar power production report for the company’s users. This involved regular design meetings with the CEO and COO, daily tech stand-ups, and full ownership of the final product. The written software was handed over to the full-time team, and has since been used to generate regular annual reports for the company's users. ### Deckhand @ SuperYachts International Jan 2017 – Jan 2018 | Mediterranean Sea I learnt essential teamwork and time management skills, delivering the best service and hospitality to charter guests while working aboard two super-yachts (110m and 74m in length). I rose to be one of the longest-serving crew-members on my second yacht, and was often given leadership responsibilities. Officers commented that they appreciated my determination, my attention to detail and my ability to keep a level head when under pressure. I left the industry after two successful years working at sea, in order to study Computer Science and Mathematical Statistics at the University of Cape Town. ## Education ### Bachelor of Science - BS in Computer Science and Mathematical Statistics University of Cape Town Jan 2019 – Jan 2022 ## Contact & Social - LinkedIn: https://linkedin.com/in/boydrkane - GitHub: https://github.com/beyarkay --- Source: https://flows.cv/boyd JSON Resume: https://flows.cv/boyd/resume.json Last updated: 2026-03-20
