After a decade in the software engineering realm, both within the private sector and academics, I've learned that the "software" part of our field reveals only a small part of the story. I've spearheaded projects that were soundly designed and implemented, but the final product never saw the light of day. I've managed small efforts that I considered "hacks" at the time, but brought significant productivity benefits to the end user. What truly matters is quickly bringing sustainable value to the customer no matter what the overall industry is. Development life cycles and solution stacks change; learning how to work effectively with a team to solve novel problems is a skill that will never become obsolete.
