Honors Thesis: The Comparative Analysis of Rumen Microbiomes - Identifying Factors Contributing to Methane Emissions

Studying under Postdoc Pengfan Zhang to build a comprehensive genome database of the rumen microbiome and establish key methanogens and metabolic pathways that contribute to methane production in ruminants. Developing algorithms and pipelines to accelerate genome binning, sequencing and assembly with Biotite Python package, applying statistical models (t-test, regression, random forest, PCA) to analyze species and gene abundance, diversity.

Led Cal Band’s PR and marketing initiatives, focusing on fundraising, recruitment, social media, community engagement, and alumni relations, managed a PR team to execute strategies and enhance visibility in the new ACC conference. Garnered over 500K+ views on social media platforms through reels, videos, and new content. Raised over $200,000 for the band through coordination with alumni and university development, planned and organized a fundraising dinner with 150+ guests and high-profile donors in attendance, secured sponsorships and donations. Coordinated with Cal Athletics management on media promotions, budgetary needs, and conference realignment.

Implemented new pages and features on Members Only, a custom internal website written in Python Django, HTML, CSS, Javascript tailored to Cal Band members’ needs such as managing attendance, uniforms, instrument rentals, and recruiting. Designed excusal request system for members to be excused from performances without negatively affecting attendance. Kickstarted mobile app integration in Expo with digital, synchronized marching drill pages and sheet music features. Coordinated with cross-functional teams to implement user experience improvements according to member feedback.

Responsible for leading sectionals to improve the musicality of the section. Also in charge of editing arrangements, rewriting music, and drum inventory.
