# Connor Lien > Software Engineer at Databricks Location: San Francisco, California, United States Profile: https://flows.cv/connor Software engineer, designer, and problem solver with experience in database systems, full-stack development, and game development. Check out my website at connorlien.github.io. ## Work Experience ### Software Engineer @ Databricks Jan 2023 – Present | San Francisco Bay Area ### Researcher @ University of California, Berkeley Jan 2022 – Jan 2023 | Berkeley, California, United States Worked on scalable and usable tools for data science advised by Dixin Tang and Professor Aditya Parameswaran. Affiliated with the Berkeley SKY Computing Lab and the EPIC Data Lab. My main research centered around developing scalable distributed spreadsheet lookup functions based on distributed join and approximate search algorithms. I also implemented the full suite of Google Sheets single-operator math functions for FormS, a scalable spreadsheet execution system. I also used multi-query optimization techniques to accelerate Lux, a visual recommendation system for pandas DataFrames. Lastly, as part of the DataSpread project, I tested pattern inference algorithms for spreadsheet formulae using a novel subsequence algorithm. ### Undergraduate Student Instructor @ University of California, Berkeley Jan 2021 – Jan 2023 CS 186 (Database Systems): Fall 2022, Spring 2023 Taught a discussion section, held office hours, and developed course content. Covered concepts including buffer management, query optimization, and distributed data processing. CS 61C (Computer Architecture): Fall 2021 Led a lab section, held office hours, and managed course logistics. Concepts covered included parallelization in C, CPU design, MapReduce, RISC-V assembly, and cache optimization strategies. ### Software Engineering Intern @ Stripe Jan 2022 – Jan 2022 | San Francisco, California, United States During my internship at Stripe, I created a set of internal tools using Ruby and React/TypeScript to help developers maximize the performance and memory usage of their code. I utilized Kubernetes cron jobs to run an algorithm to efficiently traverse a directed graph with over 200,000 nodes in seconds and save the collected data to S3. I then rendered the data on an interactive D3 dashboard to improve interpretability and usability. ### VP of Projects @ Codebase Jan 2021 – Jan 2022 | Berkeley, California, United States Codebase is a UC Berkeley student organization that aims to build meaningful software projects for companies and nonprofits, and equip its members and the UC Berkeley community with the skills to succeed in the tech industry. As one of the VPs of Projects for the Spring 2022 semester, I sourced, specced, and managed projects for 10 project managers and 30 developers. The client teams worked alongside Bill.com, Nuro.ai, TruEra, and Mothership, while the mentored project worked with the Berkeley Food Pantry. ### Project Manager @ Codebase Jan 2021 – Jan 2021 | Berkeley, California, United States As a Project Manager for Codebase, I managed teams of 6 developers which included creating project specs, scheduling tasks, and organizing deliverables. Addepar Led a team to build an entity search engine backed by AWS OpenSearch. We created a full-stack web application using React and Spring Boot to demonstrate the use case of the API, and automated the OpenSearch domain creation process using Terraform. In addition, we ran several tests to analyze the performance of our system given different storage and compute instance types. Postman Developed a suite of cloud integrations using AWS, Azure, and GCP: https://www.postman.com/berkeley-codebase-2021/workspace/codebase-cloud-integrations/overview. Features included a collection to manage websites, generate collections from parsing API request logs, and backing up collections to version control systems. ### Software Developer @ Codebase Jan 2020 – Jan 2020 | Berkeley, California, United States As a Software Developer for Codebase, I created industry-quality software for client companies using a variety of technologies and tools. Nutanix My team and I built a full-stack Drools rules configurator using Spring Boot and React. I designed a complex nested input system with multiple forms, and helped to implement code generation in the back-end. Atlassian Built a decision log analyzer using React.js and Go to rerun a set of OPA decision log requests. My main responsibility was on the front-end, where I retrieved user input, displayed results returned from API endpoints, and developed a multi-purpose filtering system. ### Software Development Engineer Intern @ Amazon Jan 2021 – Jan 2021 | Seattle, Washington, United States During my internship at Amazon, I developed a full-stack internal price history visualizer for Amazon’s Consumer Organization to display price trends over time. The application was hosted on an internal website, where I used Spring MVC and D3 to render visualizations with data from a set of custom API Gateway endpoints backed by AWS Lambda. To aggregate the prices, I developed a MapReduce algorithm to filter over 14 billion purchases fetched from a pricing database with Amazon Athena. ### Software Engineering Intern @ SIFF.IO Jan 2020 – Jan 2020 | Irvine, California, United States Created a robust interactive feature set for the SIFF web application utilizing React.js and react-bootstrap. Developed intricate displays for user input and handled front-end endpoint requests to save and load processed data. Assembled detailed wireframes to ensure a functional, intuitive, and aesthetically pleasing input system. ## Education ### Bachelor's degree in Computer Science University of California, Berkeley Jan 2019 – Jan 2023 ## Contact & Social - LinkedIn: https://linkedin.com/in/connorlien - Website: https://connorlien.github.io - GitHub: https://github.com/connorlien --- Source: https://flows.cv/connor JSON Resume: https://flows.cv/connor/resume.json Last updated: 2026-03-22
