# David Pitera > Experienced architecting/designing highly available, resilient, DR-able backend/distributed/database systems offered aaS to customers, ensuring customers’ user experiences are top-notch and production-worthy. Location: Greater Boston, United States Profile: https://flows.cv/davidpitera I'm a hardcore lover of all things learning and all things food :) Interests include: cloud, distributed systems, databasing, especially love solving problems of distribution, coordination, and design; ensuring operational integrity of cloud-based services; continuous-delivery; and big-data-analytics. ## Work Experience ### Senior Software Engineer @ IBM Cloud Databases Jan 2015 – Present | Boston, MA • IBM Cloud Databases: - Architect highly available, resilient, Disaster Recoverable backend/distributed database systems offered -aaS to customers on our Kubernetes backed Common Data Cloud Platform (running 25K+ critical database workloads on 100 clusters backed by 20K worker nodes across 12 worldwide regions), with special attention given to ensuring: • customers' user experiences are top-notch and production-worthy. • SRE operations and Customer Support are smooth and seamless, both in the design of the technical investigative and resolution architecture and the escalation flow from Support all the way through the pipeline to Database SME. • Mongo Backup and Restore are efficient and performant, meeting customers strict SLO requirements (reduced Restore from 48H to 1H). • customer Connection Ingress and User Management into the DB systems works properly and is implemented consistently across all database products. - Architect technical solutions and lead the phased delivery approach for BNPP’s most requested features: Datastax/Cassandra Search, Mongo Point in time Recovery, Mongo Sharding. - Mentor and lead 10 junior engineers on delivery, design, implementation of above technologies. - Lead conversations with customers (i.e. Bank BNP of Paribas) to ensure their issues are resolved properly and their needs are met appropriately by feature design. - Liaise with Managers, Directors, Product Managers, Compliance Engineers, and my team to design, lead, and deliver commitments effectively, accurately, and timely. • JanusGraph on Compose: - Designed and implemented a dynamic graph management tool. - Implemented enhancements to prevent garbage collection pauses when querying large data in the backend system. - Named official JanusGraph committer December of 2017. • Ambrosia: - Designed graph model and implemented a generalized graph traversal REST API - Designed and implemented a NLP solution, which uses Spark, HDFS, Python NLTK to create the Nutrition Graph ### Undergraduate Tutor @ Yale University Careers Jan 2014 – Jan 2015 | New Haven, CT One course is: Mathematical Tools for Computer Scientists, which explores linear algebra, graph theory, combinatorics, probability theory, logic, and number theory. The second course is: Introduction to Programming. I held office hours to aid students in their understanding of the course material in general, to help the students complete the weekly homework assignments, and to prepare the students for the tests. ### Undergraduate Research Assistant @ Yale Univeristy Jan 2014 – Jan 2015 | New Haven, CT I worked with Holly Rushmeier in Yale’s Computer Graphic’s Lab. I was exploring a cost effective way to measure the subsurface scattering parameters of an arbitrary heterogeneous material while creating more realistic renderings. I used many statistical regression models to match simulated data to previously measured data. More information below under "Publications." This work became my Senior Thesis. ### Moncrief Undergraduate Summer Intern @ Institute for Computational Engineering and Sciences (ICES) Jan 2013 – Jan 2013 | Austin, Texas Researched with Dr. Keshav Pingali in the Grid and Distributed Computing Department. Collaborated with graduate students in examining methods to parallelize famous algorithms, such as Delaunay Triangulation and Refinement, and Barnes-Hut Force Algorithms. Studied graph visualization. Implemented a refined Force-Directed Replacement Algorithm in C++ that runs parallel. ## Education ### Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Applied Mathematics Yale University ## Contact & Social - LinkedIn: https://linkedin.com/in/david-pitera-7a3438b5 --- Source: https://flows.cv/davidpitera JSON Resume: https://flows.cv/davidpitera/resume.json Last updated: 2026-03-31
