# Dean Stanton > Senior Software Engineer Location: Mountain View, California, United States Profile: https://flows.cv/deanstanton Linux/Unix software developer, experienced in Python, Bash, C, C++, Java. At Tintri, updated Linux OS components in their storage and VM management appliances. Scripted partial automation of OS update to assist subsequent updates and used it to update multiple times. Ported management console so it could install and run on Hyper-V as well as VMware hypervisor. Project lead for on-demand build system in Python for continuous integration and testing, managing built package size. Supervised off-shore development and maintenance, mentoring junior engineers. At Moka5, helped develop their Ubuntu Linux-based "BareMetal" virtualization platform. Moka5 closed up shop. Developed software in VMware's "Server-hosted Desktop" department which provided VDI (Virtual Desktop Infrastructure) solutions. Formerly was part of Sun Microsystems' Advanced Visualization team, which attached graphics hardware to servers and provided remote access to graphics programs via VirtualGL with or without TurboVNC. Adapted Sun Grid Engine to allocate graphics resources. Interfaced to tech pubs, SQA, release engineering, etc. Was chair of Sun's "Layered Software" Architecture Review Committee, which assured that software projects were adhering to company standards/expectations and would survive upgrades of other software components. * Recognized for leading all phases of the software process: architecture, specification, design, coding, test, documentation, training, and bug management. * Flexible, innovative and resourceful. Specialties: * Awarded two U.S. Patents for innovative architecture in the fields of video and visualization. * Both server-side and client-side programming. Both user-land and Unix kernel programming. * Departmental go-to guy regarding language features and compiler idiosyncrasies. ## Work Experience ### Staff Engineer, Software @ Tintri by DDN Jan 2018 – Present | Santa Clara, CA Modernized, adapted, and refactored CentOS Linux operating system components (last updated in 2010). More than doubled the Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVEs) addressed. Scripted partial automation of OS update to assist subsequent updates and used it to update to newer CentOS. Ported management console so it could install and run on Hyper-V as well as VMware hypervisor. Project lead for on-demand build system in Python for continuous integration and testing, managing built package size. Supervised off-shore development and maintenance, mentoring junior engineers. ### Sr. Member of Technical Staff, Software @ Tintri Jan 2016 – Present | Mountain View, CA Modernized, adapted, and refactored CentOS Linux operating system components (last updated in 2010). More than doubled the Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVEs) addressed. Scripted partial automation of processing, to assist subsequent updates. Project lead for on-demand build system in Python for continuous integration and testing, managing built package size. Supervised off-shore development and maintenance, mentoring junior engineers. ### Contracting Software Engineer @ Pure Storage Jan 2015 – Jan 2016 | Mountain View, CA Upgraded product's Ubuntu Linux, applying local patches. ### Sr. Software Engineer @ MokaFive Jan 2014 – Jan 2015 | Redwood City, CA Joined Moka5 (a.k.a. MokaFive) in Redwood City, CA, to help develop their Ubuntu Linux-based "BareMetal" virtualization platform. Moka5 technology let customers deploy enterprise desktops as highly-secure, locally-running but remotely administered virtual machines. This improved performance over VDI solutions and allowed offline use. Policies could assure workspaces are regularly updated and professionally managed. Moka5 VMs, known as "LivePCs," can be "played" (i.e., run) on Windows, MacOS, or their "BareMetal" environment, which appears to merely boot the LivePC. Their tagline: "Enterprise AnyWare™ for the Everywhere Enterprise." Moka5 has closed up shop, despite a working product and happy customers. ### Sr. Member of Technical Staff @ VMware Jan 2010 – Jan 2011 In VMware's "Server-hosted Desktop" department: Ported Linux PC-over-IP codec (decompression) from x86 to ARM clients. Ported Virtual Channel software from Windows to Linux. Managed bug backlog, codifying bug handling on Wiki page, and represented development team to product team. ### Sr. Staff Engineer @ Sun Microsystems Jan 1985 – Jan 2009 Most recently, the senior engineer of Sun's Advanced Visualization team (2001 - 2009). Team attached graphics accelerators to server systems and developed “middleware” that transparently allowed 3D visualization software to be run on those servers while viewed on a variety of networked clients, including notebook computers and thin clients. Adapted Sun's Grid Engine (SGE) job scheduler to manage graphics resources for local video, remote video over IP (with or without VNC), and batch rendering. Developed software to configure sophisticated “Zulu” graphics device (XVR-4000), including Operating System device driver components (1999 – 2001). Project lead for C++ software simulation of “Zulu” high-end graphics hardware. Responsible for functional, chip-level, and board-level simulation, integration and testing approach. Provided guidance and direction to 6 engineers. (1997 - 1999) Chair of 8-member software architecture review committee that provided advice, arbitration, and consent on proposed products and interface changes. Criteria include adherence to external standards or conventions, company style and policy guidelines, and good engineering practice. (1994-1997) ### Software Engineer @ Fortune Systems Jan 1983 – Jan 1985 Implemented firmware for their first graphics board, providing graphics primitives, text console emulation, etc. ## Education ### MSE in Computer Information and Control Engineering University of Michigan ### Bachelor of Science - BS in Computer and Communication Sciences University of Michigan ## Contact & Social - LinkedIn: https://linkedin.com/in/wdeanstanton --- Source: https://flows.cv/deanstanton JSON Resume: https://flows.cv/deanstanton/resume.json Last updated: 2026-04-10
