As part of a senior student design project being conducted at the Florida Institute of Technology, I am the team lead for research aiming to redesign the primary components that sit between a high voltage HEV/EV battery and Ford's M9000MACHE three-phase electric motor.
This will most likely include the integration of the UCC5870 isolated gate driver, between a TMS320 MCU, and 6 IGBTs that will switch current through each of the 3 phases of the motor.
This is an incredibly complex endeavor which has been worked on by various teams over the past few years. So far, I am proud to say that we have made unprecedented progress in just one semester and will continue to do so.
By May 2025, we plan to have a fully functional traction inverter design capable of switching extremely high currents at extremely high frequencies.
