# Duncan Mazza > Pose & Localization SWE @ Bedrock Location: San Francisco Bay Area, United States Profile: https://flows.cv/duncanmazza I am broadly interested in computer vision for robotics, with a particular interest in SLAM. As a Software Engineer at Bedrock Robotics, my work is focused on building pose estimation and localization capabilities for excavators. My previous work includes working on building drone inspection and mapping capabilities for drones at Skydio, where my contributions spanned core autonomy capabilities (e.g., the Skydio Visual Positioning System) to building out a new Asset-Based Inspection solution for utility customers. ## Work Experience ### Software Engineer @ Bedrock Robotics Jan 2025 – Present | San Francisco, California, United States Working on pose and localization for autonomous construction equipment. ### Senior Autonomy Engineer, Inspection & Mapping @ Skydio Jan 2025 – Jan 2025 | San Mateo, California, United States ### Autonomy Products Software Engineer @ Skydio Jan 2022 – Jan 2025 | San Mateo, California, United States ### Student Researcher @ Olin College Crowdsourcing and Machine Learning Lab Jan 2021 – Jan 2022 | Needham, Massachusetts, United States Researched offline pose graph optimization for estimating sparse fiducial poses. Focused on building simulation infrastructure, tuning the optimization, and estimating optimized pose accuracy absent ground truth data. ### Textbook Contributor @ Olin Satellite + Spectrum Technology & Policy Group (OSSTP) Jan 2021 – Jan 2022 | Needham, Massachusetts, United States Contributed to textbook on wireless communications to be used by the Principles of Wireless Communications class. Covering topics such as OFDM and MIMO. Recipient of funds from the Massachusetts Space Grant (Fall 2021). ### Software and Product Management Intern @ PTC Jan 2021 – Jan 2021 | Boston, Massachusetts, United States Advanced feasibility and desirability validation efforts for team developing a new A.R. product: ‣ Improved efficiency of 3D A.R. content authoring and manipulation for end-users by adding new mobile app features (implemented in C#) – most notably, by designing and enabling a passive handheld object to be used as an input device. ‣ Utilized an internal SDK to implement the feature as a modular component. ‣ Tested authoring solution with stakeholders during a customer site visit and solicited feedback. ‣ Conducted subject matter expert interviews and user research at customer site visit; synthesized findings into a prioritized set of product requirements for A.R. content authoring. ### Founding Partner @ 248 Builders (formerly GLV) Jan 2020 – Jan 2021 Co-founded 248 Builders, an inter-college student V.C. cohort that organizes events for and brings funding into the BOW entrepreneurial community through an investor partnership. Engaged with responsibilities spanning strategic planning, deal evaluation, and leading public A.M.A. events. With rest of cohort, led decision for a $25k investment. ### Course Assistant for Software Design @ Franklin W. Olin College of Engineering Jan 2020 – Jan 2020 Live-assisted students on topics in Python development and best practices in software engineering (e.g., code documentation). Reviewed students’ code, graded homework submissions, and supplied detailed feedback. ### Research and Development Intern @ PTC Jan 2020 – Jan 2020 ‣ Explored the combination of a cloud-based computer vision technology with proprietary A.R. localization capabilities through vendor research, academic literature review, and creating interactive prototypes using Unity and C# that compared vendors’ technology and different algorithms for integration. ‣ Presented quantitative measures and prototype demonstrations showing the efficacy of the algorithms integrating incorporating the vision capability. ‣ Technical skills used: 3D data processing and visualization; Bayesian statistics; and algorithm design and analysis. ### Product Management Intern (A.R. group) @ PTC Jan 2020 – Jan 2020 ‣ Researched the field service technician user group for informing viability, desirability, and feasibility of A.R. solutions. ‣ Compiled macro trends, interpersonal dynamics, pain points, and value drivers experienced by field service technicians. Derived concrete implications of these findings for PTC, created a stand-alone resource, and presented findings. ### Software Engineering Intern @ Kuva Systems Jan 2019 – Jan 2019 | Cambridge, Massachusetts One of two primary contributors to development of a Python-powered GUI used by several engineers (and during live product demos for key industry partners) for processing multi-spectral infrared images with the purpose of detecting methane. ‣ Implemented object-oriented structures in the back-end; data visualization features to enable both user interaction with and processing of data; and unit tests. Performed mathematical simulations characterizing the effect of environmental factors on the measured signal, authored a detailed report, and manufactured datasets to validate the mathematics and corresponding data processing algorithms. ## Education ### Bachelor of Science - BS in Electrical and Computer Engineering Franklin W.
