# Franklin Rice > Senior Software Engineer at Meta Superintelligence Labs Location: San Francisco Bay Area, United States Profile: https://flows.cv/franklinrice I am all about the human side of digital security and safety, and am at my best while leading technical teams through complex, nuanced, and cross-functional spaces. I'm currently working to define and implement the next frontier of online safety across on Meta's VR & Metaverse Integrity teams. Previously I worked to keep job seekers safe on Jobs on Facebook via a mix of backend systems, data science, ML, and research. These directions were also influenced by my earlier experiences building out investigative tooling for internal Facebook work for safety and user protection, as well as with Archer at UC Berkeley building products for NGO clients for counter-terrorism and the investigation of international crime. ## Work Experience ### Senior Software Engineer @ Meta Jan 2025 – Present | San Francisco Bay Area It is imperative that we--as companies and as society as a whole--successfully develop responsible and safe AI on the first attempt. In an era of unprecedented technical development, I believe the most important job now and in the future is to ensure that the new technologies are prevented from being used for short-term or long-term harm, acutely to individuals, or systematically to humanity. That is why I am working on the systems that keep the models in check here at Meta's Superintelligence Labs. ### Senior Software Engineer @ Meta Jan 2021 – Jan 2025 | San Francisco, California, United States MR, VR, and AR are the next frontier of remote interaction, and their integrity will be paramount to their successes. Our work on the VR Integrity (trust and safety) team is all about keeping users safe in VR: giving users the ability to control their social experiences, staying one step ahead of malicious users, and navigating the complexities of the modern policy patchwork that has evolved around the need to keep children safe online. I have led engineering teams through many parts of this journey: being responsible for Youth Safety for teen and parent-managed child VR accounts, balancing age assurance in a nuanced global regulatory environment, building out supportive experiences for harm self-mitigation, behind-the-scenes modeling for malicious actor detection, and much more. I am a Tech Lead who is known for effectively working closely with product and policy counterparts to carefully bridge the technical and strategic divide. ### Software Engineer @ Facebook Jan 2018 – Jan 2021 | Menlo Park, California Integrity-focused software engineer on the Facebook Job Search platform, building systems to fight scam, spam, and everything in between. ### Engineering Lead @ Archer Jan 2018 – Jan 2018 | Berkeley, California Head of technical planning and implementation for Archer's 4-person team working with the University of California, Berkeley Human Rights Center. Built offline desktop photo/video metadata analysis and reporting tool using Electron, Node, and SQLite. ### External Vice President @ Machine Learning at Berkeley Jan 2017 – Jan 2017 | Berkeley, CA As External Vice president of ML@B, I direct the actions of the Marketing, Relations, Web, and Blog committees of one of the fastest-growing and game-changing student organizations at Berkeley. I coordinate the outreach that keeps our industry projects going with clients including GitHub, Intuit, IBM, and more; the machine learning blog with 130,000 and growing views; and the marketing team which made our 5% applicant acceptance rate among the lowest on campus. I aspire that more big expansions will soon allow us to impact even more communities and push the boundaries of what student clubs can accomplish. ### Project Lead @ Machine Learning at Berkeley Jan 2017 – Jan 2017 | Berkeley, CA As a Project Lead on the Intuit industry consulting team, I worked with my co-lead to plan, schedule, maintain, and deliver our 6-person team's semester of work in the natural language processing space. It was a great opportunity to build a productive and effective team environment and workflow from the ground up. ### Undergraduate Researcher @ Berkeley Emergent Space Tensegrities Lab Jan 2016 – Jan 2017 | Berkeley, CA Led the electronic redesign of the Tensegrity Toy 4 Mini (tt4-mini) spherical tensegrity robot with one other CS student under grant from NASA. Reimplemented the wireless communication over radio and allowed for simultaneous motor actuation, which opened the door for research into locomotion policies. Paper published at IROS 2017 on unprecedented improvements in hill climbing thanks to the new control policies. ### Software Engineering Intern @ Facebook Jan 2017 – Jan 2017 | San Francisco Bay Area Software Engineering Intern working on Hack, PHP, and React backend tools which increase the efficiency and effectiveness of content evaluation. ### Engineer @ Archer Jan 2017 – Jan 2017 | Berkeley, California Part of the initial group of students in the Data Science and Transnational Security Collider course at UC Berkeley that went on to become Archer. Built tool for tracking payments into and out of known illicit bitcoin wallets (e.g. terror financing). ### CTO @ Vest Investing Jan 2016 – Jan 2016 | Berkeley, CA Vest Investing is an app and web service designed to combine themed investing with commission-free, low value trades and social, informational content generation, aimed at the layman with little financial acumen or disposable income. Worked in coffescript/javascript, haml/html, css/scss, adn ruby. Based on Ruby on Rails and Backbone.js. ### Finance Assistant @ FreeMonee Technologies, Inc. Jan 2013 – Jan 2013 | San Mateo, California The Summer after my sophomore year in high school, I was hired to be a Summer intern and finance assistant by a local start-up, FreeMonee Technologies, that had heard of my success in high school mathematics.
