# Geet Duggal > Software Engineer & Manager Location: Mountain View, California, United States Profile: https://flows.cv/geet Leader and Software Engineer that loves to work with teams and build tools that delight. Ph.D. in Computer Science, Computational Biology from Carnegie Mellon University and a research engineer at Department of Defense, NSA in a previous life. As the Senior Director of Engineering at DNAnexus, a pioneering cloud-based platform for genomic and biomedical data analysis, I have worked extensively as an individual contributor and lead multiple teams of talented engineers who are passionate about building scalable, reliable, and secure solutions for the healthcare and life sciences industry. I have 8+ years of experience in leadership and software development in Silicon Valley, with a focus on backend development and developer experience using APIs and compilers on top of our backend. I have also had 5+ years of experience in engineering research on large scale computer systems and networks from a previous life at the Department of Defense, National Security Agency. I have a PhD in Computer Science from Carnegie Mellon University, where I specialized in software tools and algorithms for Computational Biology, conducted research on next generation sequencing applications using machine learning and data mining algorithms, and published multiple papers in prestigious conferences and journals (> 8500 citations), and won the best video award at KDD 2012. I especially enjoy the positive people-centric aspects of engineering and applying my knowledge and creativity to solve challenging problems. ## Work Experience ### Software Engineer and Manager @ Verkada Jan 2024 – Present I currently develop code and work with teams on Verkada's Cameras product line and associated backend. It's pretty awesome. ### Senior Director of Engineering @ DNAnexus Jan 2021 – Jan 2024 | Mountain View, California, United States While reporting to the President of the company, grew 6 engineering teams (upwards of 30 FTE in US, CZ) across backend, developer experience (layer on top of API), and 'scientific product' (uses of API for applications in Genomics). Led the creation of a new Software Development Lifecycle to establish and define clear processes and dependencies across teams. Worked closely with senior and executive leadership in Product, Operations, Support & Care Teams (xVantage), and R&D to deliver large-scale projects involving multiple teams. Designed and implemented a set of real-world scalability tests that scale-test the platform at peak production level loads (hundreds of thousands to millions of compute instances within hourly timescales). Worked with the engineering teams to deliver on critical large projects with partners including, for example, St. Jude Medical Center, Eli Lilly, City of Hope, and the UK Biobank. Worked closely with the Sr. Director of Operations on issues related to operational aspects of software development, on-call rotations, and operational cost management. ### Director Of Engineering: Backend, Developer Experience @ DNAnexus Jan 2019 – Jan 2021 | Mountain View, CA ### Principal Software Engineer and Manager @ DNAnexus Jan 2018 – Jan 2019 Grew a team of four people to focus on developer experience using the DNAnexus platform. This included new developments in backend workflow capabilities, CLI tools (eg. managing large scale downloads and maximizing 25 Gigabit network backplane throughput on the client side), Jupyterlab, integration with accelerated FPGA-based technologies, and general ability for customers to easily and dynamically host HTTP apps as secure, authorized HTTPS web pages on the platform. Expanded key aspects of product feature set to work across regions including UK, Australia, and China. Working closely with customers and development of these capabilities helped the company grow revenue within its existing customer base during license negotiations and win new customers due to the existence of these features. ### Senior Software Engineer and Developer Experience Lead @ DNAnexus Jan 2017 – Jan 2018 In addition to work and skills as an R&D Engineer: built upon and developed key platform capabilities related to containerization (Docker, LXC), the first compiler for standard workflow language support (Common Workflow Language), and cloud-based memoization/job output reuse capabilities (across both AWS, Azure). Also significantly re-vamped public-facing documentation and worked on projects involving additional large customers including the FDA, Myriad, and Natera. ### Senior R&D Engineer @ DNAnexus Jan 2015 – Jan 2017 Developed features spanning both the CLI and backend components of the system. Compared industry standared C/C++/Java tools for genomic sequencing with emerging technologies based on Spark. Worked closely with internal Science team and with key customers in Academic Consortia, Industry (eg. ENCODE @ Stanford, Astrazeneca). ### Postdoctoral Fellow @ Carnegie Mellon University Jan 2015 – Jan 2015 Algorithms and tools for large-scale processing of genomic sequencing data. > 8500 citations to date of work published during academic career. ### Systems Researcher @ United States Department of Defense Jan 2005 – Jan 2010 Developed algorithms and tools for processing large-volume streaming data for the security and defense of military networks. ## Education ### Doctor of Philosophy - PhD in Computer Science Carnegie Mellon University ### Ph.D in Computer Science University of Maryland ### B.S. in Computer Science Northwestern University ## Contact & Social - LinkedIn: https://linkedin.com/in/eng-crisis - Portfolio: http://www.geetduggal.com --- Source: https://flows.cv/geet JSON Resume: https://flows.cv/geet/resume.json Last updated: 2026-04-11
