# Georges Goetz > Software Engineer Location: Palo Alto, California, United States Profile: https://flows.cv/georgesgoetz I'm a software engineer at Bedrock Robotics, with several years of experience developing sensing solutions for embodied AI applications. Prior to Bedrock Robotics, I was a software engineer on Waymo's sensor team. Before that, I was a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Neurosurgery at Stanford University, where I tackled problems ranging from computational models of the retina for visual prosthetics, to phase-resolved optical coherence tomography (OCT) imaging for early detection of retinal diseases. I also worked on an advanced electronic retinal implant for restoring sight to the blind, for which I modeled how the implant interfaces with the visual system and designed virtual reality headsets for patients. Pixium Vision (www.pixium-vision.com) is now moving forward with clinical trials of the technology we developed in the Palanker lab at Stanford University. ## Work Experience ### Software Engineer @ Bedrock Robotics Jan 2024 – Present | San Francisco, California, United States ### Staff Software Engineer @ Waymo Jan 2018 – Jan 2024 | Mountain View 2022 - 2024: Staff Software Engineer. 2020 - 2021: Senior Software Engineer. 2018 - 2019: Software Engineer. ### Hardware Engineer @ Verily Life Sciences Jan 2017 – Jan 2018 | South San Francisco ### Postdoctoral Fellow @ Stanford University Jan 2015 – Jan 2017 | Stanford, CA, USA Developed novel optical techniques techniques for label-free detection of neural activity in tissue, and analysis techniques for studying computations in populations of retinal neurons. - designed and built an ultra high-speed (5,000--20,000 fps acquisition rate, 1.2 GB/s data bandwidth), wide-field, low-noise (< 1.5 mrad RMS) interferometric microscope for label-free optical imaging of neural activity - implemented a swept-source phase-resolved optical coherence tomography instrument for quantifying light-induced changes in retinal photoreceptors - supervised graduate students: directed the development of a novel algorithm for processing time series recordings of retinal activity in MATLAB, supervised the implementation of signal-processing algorithms for retinal prosthetic applications, and guided the prototyping of a digital phase contrast microscope - transformed a large monolithic Java application for visualizing and analyzing neural data streams into a distributed, multi-process, multi-threaded utility using ZeroMQ ### PhD Candidate @ Stanford University Jan 2010 – Jan 2015 Designed a novel neural prosthesis for restoration of sight to the blind. Responsibilities included: - developing methods for automated analysis of large neural recording data (100+ GB) using supervised and unsupervised learning techniques such as dimensionality reduction, k-means and spectral clustering, dictionary learning and logistic regression classifiers - designing and building near-the-eye display systems using LCD, DLP and holographic technologies to determine appropriate activation schemes for a retinal implant - characterizing the visual percepts elicited by a retinal prosthesis in order to establish an expected baseline performance in the clinic - modeling the electrical behavior of the implant using a finite element modeling package (COMSOL) The results were published in 10+ peer-reviewed articles in journals such as Nat. Photonics, Nat. Medicine, Nat. Commun., J. Neural Engineering and others; they were also presented at 20+ international conferences. ### Summer intern @ Thales Jan 2009 – Jan 2009 Implemented a Kalman filter-based algorithm for tracking of targets in Ground Moving Target Indicator radar imaging. ## Education ### Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Electrical and Electronics Engineering Stanford University ### Master of Science (MS) in Electrical and Electronics Engineering Stanford University ### Master of Science (MS) in Applied Mathematics CentraleSupélec ## Contact & Social - LinkedIn: https://linkedin.com/in/georges-goetz-053a3280 - Portfolio: http://stanford.edu/~ggoetz/ --- Source: https://flows.cv/georgesgoetz JSON Resume: https://flows.cv/georgesgoetz/resume.json Last updated: 2026-04-10
