# Greg Meess > Software + Hardware Engineer | Creating products from ideas Location: Berkeley, California, United States Profile: https://flows.cv/gregmeess ## Work Experience ### Staff Software Engineer @ Ansa Biotechnologies, Inc. Jan 2024 – Present | Oakland, California, United States ### Director of Software Engineering @ Sutro Machine Inc. Jan 2018 – Jan 2024 | San Francisco Bay Area • Developed specialized additive manufacturing software for brand-name clients including Fortune 500 companies. • Led remote software team to develop and deploy a native desktop application for print preparation; as a white-label application this is highly customizable to client needs and includes a plugin system and secure licensing. • Managed client relationships from business development through product specification and implementation; helped clients move from high-level goals to appropriate computational geometry algorithms and efficient implementations. • Maintained and extended open-source C# libraries for additive manufacturing; architected core classes and plugin API for flexible reuse in multiple applications. ### Principal Engineer @ Autodesk Jan 2014 – Jan 2018 | San Francisco Bay Area • Developed a high-performance C++ toolpathing library for additive manufacturing; currently used in both Fusion 360 and Netfabb. • Took “Project Escher,” a multi-gantry asynchronous parallelized manufacturing concept from ideation through production. Included development of algorithms for efficient work distribution and collision avoidance, as well as several rounds of hardware development for proof-of-concept and reference implementation. ### Lead Software Engineer @ Topolabs Jan 2013 – Jan 2014 | San Francisco Bay Area • Lead developer for non-planar FFF/FDM toolpathing software; this novel approach used advanced toolpath strategies to enable new production capabilities on existing hardware. • Developed a variety of techniques to allow printing conformal topographic layers and modifying mesh geometry to embed images as heightmaps. • Took startup from zero to acquisition in 15 months. ### Engineer @ Cool Earth Solar Jan 2010 – Jan 2014 | Livermore, CA Fast-paced startup developing high-concentration PV systems with inflated film optics • Mechanical design, prototyping and testing on wide range of projects, including: - Lightweight two-axis (azimuth & elevation) solar trackers - Custom tools and processes for manufacture of precision composite parts - Reliable retention, sealing and production of inflatable film structures - Fault-tolerant receiver modules with strict optical and thermal performance criteria • Responsible for complex system analyses (e.g. coupled simulation of effects of non-linear structural deformation on optical performance) • Wrote extensive software and algorithm library to automate design of embossed refractive Fresnel patterns on cylindrical surfaces, using Python and the SolidWorks API • Worked in conjunction with vendors to adapt prototype designs for high-volume processes • Promoted to Engineer III, coordinated small groups on time-critical projects • Co-author on patent, “Inflated Tubular Solar Concentrators” ### Consultant @ Super Pulse Jan 2009 – Jan 2010 | Ithaca, NY Helped small startup prototype applications of new sterilization technique • Designed, fabricated and tested environmentally sealed mechanical components • Created and programmed electronic control systems with feedback and user interface ### Chief Mechanical Engineer @ Cornell Minesweeper Jan 2007 – Jan 2009 | Ithaca, NY Chief Mechanical Engineer: developed robotic platforms for land mine detection & disposal • Spearheaded design and implementation of autonomous vehicle systems, including a robust drive train, chassis, and omni-directional steering mechanism • Provided instruction for other team members on efficient CAD and machining practices ### Research Assistant @ Cornell University Automotive X-Prize Team Jan 2007 – Jan 2007 ### Subgroup Leader @ Cornell University Autonomous Underwater Vehicle Jan 2005 – Jan 2007 | Ithaca, NY Designed and tested submersible robots, which placed in the AUVSI competition • Managed groups of 4-8 on structural & propulsion systems, with responsibilities such as: - Vehicle upgrades, improvements, maintenance and field testing - Design & fabrication of chassis and integration of system components ### Guide @ White Mountain High Adventure Base Jan 2004 – Jan 2005 | Gilmanton, NH • Led week-long expedition trips; sea-kayaking, backpacking, and rock climbing • Planned trips, including routes, meals, gear, and contingency plans ## Education ### Masters of Engineering in Mechanical Engineering Cornell University ### Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering Cornell University ## Contact & Social - LinkedIn: https://linkedin.com/in/greg-meess --- Source: https://flows.cv/gregmeess JSON Resume: https://flows.cv/gregmeess/resume.json Last updated: 2026-04-01
