Also a father of two young girls, husband to a wonderful wife, and a keen student of Chinese language and culture. ## Work Experience ### Senior Staff Software Engineer @ Tesla Jan 2024 – Present | Palo Alto, California, United States Leading Firmware/Software for AC Charging and Optimus Charging at Tesla. ### Staff Software Engineer @ Tesla Jan 2022 – Present | Palo Alto, California, United States I lead the AC Charging Embedded Software team at Tesla. - led the development of the Universal Wall Connector, which won awards for the best AC EV charger. - shipped Tesla PowerShare V2H feature which allows Cybertruck to power customers' homes for days at a time. - proposed improvements to the ISO 15118 and OCPP protocols that are being worked into the next editions of their specs. ### Principal Software Engineer @ ev.energy Jan 2021 – Jan 2022 | San Jose, California, United States Helping enable cheaper, greener, simpler electric vehicle charging, for everyone. • Brought in to lead the effort to enable Chevrolet owners to use their EV smart charging service. • Drove this particularly challenging integration to completion, requiring the creation of a Secure Credential Service, along with many other creative solutions to work around Chevrolet API limitations. • Support for Chevrolet is now a unique selling point for the company and resulted in them winning multiple contracts with various energy providers in the US. ### Interim Head of Engineering @ Wave Jan 2021 – Jan 2022 | San Jose, California, United States Set the engineering foundation for an exciting new startup in the field of mental health coaching for young people. • Grew a small team of contractors and we built the MVP app, backend service and admin dashboards. • Collaborated closely with the product and design team and managed to adapt to their changing requirements as the company figured out exactly what we wanted to build. • Successfully launched the MVP. ### Founder @ JustTraffic Jan 2021 – Jan 2021 | San Jose, California, United States Developed an idea related to implementing road-use pricing in a much more efficient way. • Worked with a freelancer to prototype the system using TensorFlow Lite (YOLOv4) and Flutter. • Applied for multiple patents (provisional and non-provisional) which I wrote with the help of an attorney. • Produced a mathematical model for calculating how many detectors would be needed to reach a given detection rate and validated it using the SUMO traffic simulator. • Ultimately decided surveillance tech wasn't something I wanted to spend my time working on. ### Director Of Engineering/Distinguished Engineer @ Klue (Acquired by Medtronic) Jan 2018 – Jan 2021 | San Mateo, California At Klue we used machine learning to recognize eating and drinking using a wrist-worn wearable (Apple Watch and Fitbit). • I was responsible for designing, implementing, testing, releasing, and maintaining all products/features. • Built and managed a remote team of 6+ software engineering freelancers based all around the world. • Helped pivot the company from targeting the mindful eating market to the diabetes market. • Added support for Fitbit to Klue's platform which reduced our dependency on Apple, a big risk for our company at the time. This was an extremely challenging project since we only had a 120MHz ARM MCU with 65kB of memory (code+heap), and we needed it to write the app in Javascript/Typescript. • Migrated our backend to run on HIPAA compliant cloud infrastructure. • Designed and built a parametric watch face for the Klue watch app (#1 customer requested feature at the time). Klue was acquired by Medtronic. Afterwards, I led all the engineering efforts to integrate Klue into Medtronic's diabetes therapy solutions. • Represented our startup (Klue) during the due diligence part of the acquisition process. • Grew the team to 10+ people after joining this huge company with many initiatives involving our tech. • Rewrote Klue's core code as a modular SDK for integration into various products (Android and iOS). • Designed and implemented the Wearable Device Protocol which would allow us to integrate wearables more easily into our products for various use cases. • Designed and implemented a grey box testing framework for Apple Watch (based on Google's EarlGrey) which would allow us to expand the speed and scope of automated testing. • Successfully pushed for an org-wide change to using OAuth 2.0 and Open ID Connect to simplify system architecture and improve security and privacy posture. • Collaborated with the machine learning and clinical teams to create and execute our R&D roadmap. ### Software Development Manager - IoT Firmware Platform @ Amazon Lab126 Jan 2017 – Jan 2018 | Sunnyvale, California Grew and led a 10-person team to build an IoT firmware platform for Amazon products. • Responsible for the re-usable firmware module architecture, overhauling our continuous integration system, increasing our automated test capability, and setting standards with the aim of improving firmware architecture at Lab126 more generally. (Test Driven Development, embedded file systems, UART, SPI, I2C) • Managed the IoT firmware part of the relationship between Amazon Lab126 and Mediatek. • Built the foundation of what eventually became Amazon's Alexa Connect Kit Device SDK and was used in several Amazon first-party smart home devices such as the Amazon Alexa Microwave, Echo Buds and more ### Software Development Lead - Concept Engineering @ Amazon Lab126 Jan 2014 – Jan 2017 | Sunnyvale, CA Led software development in a small, cross-functional Concept Engineering team responsible for conceiving and prototyping advanced features for Amazon consumer electronic products, as well as developing entirely new customer-focused product concepts. • Presented our work to high-level leadership, including Jeff Bezos, Andy Jassy and multiple SVPs. • Had several trips to factories in China, where my EE+CS background and Chinese language ability helped significantly speed up progress. • Examples of released products our team developed include the Amazon Dash, Dash Button and the AWS IoT Button. ### Software Development Engineer @ Amazon Jan 2012 – Jan 2014 | Edinburgh, United Kingdom Built systems which mined data to find relationships between products in the Amazon catalog. Our datasets backed many of the core features of the Amazon retail websites. • Led projects related to the use of image data (Computer Vision), NLP for Chinese language data and using more advanced statistical analysis techniques (Wilcoxon signed-rank test). • Independently worked on a 20% project related to robotics and fashion, which won a Just-Do-It award. ### University Final Year Project @ Imperial College London Jan 2011 – Jan 2012 Designed and built a machine to automatically separate live mosquito larvae into male and female groups. The mosquito were genetically modified, making certain organs in the males fluorescent, and we used that to distinguish gender. The project aimed to optimize the metric of mosquito larvae sorted per second per dollar, with the larger goal of enabling malaria eradication programs which use the Sterile Insect Technique. ### President @ Imperial College Robotics Society Jan 2009 – Jan 2012 Founder and president for over 3 years. Our main goal was to increase engineering interest and enthusiasm amongst students through interesting and challenging robotics projects. The society grew year on year and by 2012 was engaging several hundred students per year in meaningful extra-curricular engineering. ### Media Processing Division - Summer Intern @ ARM Jan 2011 – Jan 2011 Built a software system which gives developers access to complex instrumentation and metrics in the Mali GPU driver. ### Summer Research Student @ Imperial College London Jan 2010 – Jan 2010 | Bio-inspired Robotics - Research Group Worked on learning by demonstration in robotics. Used echo-state neural networks to enable a robot to learn dance-moves for certain peices of music. Demonstrated a certain extent of improvisation by the robot when new music was played to it. ## Education ### Master of Engineering (MEng) in Information Systems Engineering Imperial College London ## Contact & Social - LinkedIn: https://linkedin.com/in/harry-eakins --- Source: https://flows.cv/harrye JSON Resume: https://flows.cv/harrye/resume.json Last updated: 2026-04-12
