# Jake Englund > Solutions Architect / Systems Analyst / SWE-SRE Location: San Bernardino, California, United States Profile: https://flows.cv/jakeenglund 3 years of experience working with production-scale LLM-backed GenAI systems. Backend/Infrastructure/Platform engineer with a passion for SRE/3RE. I love diagnosing problems with systems almost as much as I enjoy fixing them! ## Work Experience ### Senior Software Engineer @ Khan Academy Jan 2023 – Jan 2025 | Mountain View, California, United States Infrastructure team & Lead SRE! One of my biggest responsibilities has been a system I inherited ownership of very early in my time: a home-rolled dashboarding and alerting system, React frontend and Python backend (even though KA's mostly a Go shop these days); this was the primary reference for most KPI-based discussions and decisions throughout the org. I also helped pick up a project to containerize our development environment and get it to its current stable state which has halved dev-support tickets. I've also done a variety of projects around integrating with third-party GenAI LLM providers and, being at a company that not only embraced AI but embraced it early (Khanmigo was announced 2023-03-14, the day after I signed!), I have had the privilege of cultivating a substantial amount of experience using and integrating with these tools -- technologies which are still fundamentally in their infancy despite their widespread adoption! ### Senior Site Reliability Engineer @ Blameless Jan 2021 – Jan 2023 | Remote Infrastructure team! Did a variety of projects around keeping the stack compatible with Kubernetes version updates, and a bunch of automating processes. ### Platform Engineer @ Glitch Jan 2020 – Jan 2021 | Remote I did a few projects over the term of my contract to help improve the reliability and performance of Glitch's project hosting infrastructure, reduce hosting costs, and better handle spam, phishing, and other forms of abuse on the platform. Node.js, TypeScript, Javascript, Amazon Web Services/AWS, Terraform ### Senior Software Engineer @ Postmates Jan 2017 – Jan 2018 | San Francisco Bay Area Infrastructure team. Managed integration between AWS and GCP sections of the platform, specifically services and microservices outside the monolithic core, and supported the adoption and usage of Kubernetes for those services. Also provided support to Data Scientists (especially around their tools, like Domino Data Lab, and how they integrated with existing infrastructure), and did some data pipeline work with Flume/Google Dataflow/Apache Beam. Python, Google Cloud Platform/GCP, Kubernetes, Dataflow/Apache Beam, Amazon Web Services/AWS, Terraform ### Co-Founder, CTO @ Play Works Studio Jan 2015 – Jan 2016 | Seattle, WA I worked on everything related to PWS's flagship product, Robiis. This includes: * Electrical & Hardware Engineering (Motors, sensors, communication, power, cooling) * Software Engineering (Embedded systems, firmware, Android/iOS app development, cloud services, website design, scalability, payment processing) * Game Design (Puzzles, game environments, rules, single and multi-player dynamics, robot customizability) * Creative Development (Story, mostly in terms of integrating relevant scientific facts into the game story as accurately as possible, as well as developing the story to include more educational information) * Research & Development (Always trying to innovate cheaper, more reliable robots with "cool" functionality) * Presentation and Public Speaking * Education (Teaching children how to use the robots, app, and play our game, plus answering questions about how the robots and game pieces work. Also more fundamental principles of education, including some developmental psychology and formation of identity and stereotypes) ### Software Engineer (SWE) @ Google Jan 2014 – Jan 2015 | Kirkland, WA Google Hangouts. I worked on the Media Quality team, which was responsible for tracking reporting on audio and video quality, identifying the largest problems we had in those spaces, and developing solutions to correct or compensate for them. I focused mostly on the Android client for Hangouts. Java, C++, Android ### Site Reliability Engineer (SRE) @ Google Jan 2010 – Jan 2014 | Kirkland, WA Google Docs (2010-2013), ended because team was "defragged" out of Kirkland Google Sites & Calendar (2013-2014), "this should've been in the first defrag" My responsibilities centered mostly around traffic management and capacity planning, which was crucial for the launch of new features and services, as well as scaling up existing services as their popularity grew. I also spent substantial time working on backups and restores for these services. Like most anything else at Google, the solutions to these problems were constantly changing/improving, but independent services were responsible for compatibility with the ever-changing "best practices". I participated in a 24/7 on-call rotation (typically split into shifts between 72-96 hours, though later we moved to week-long 12-on/12-off shifts with a partner office on the other side of the planet). I did a lot of "glue work": https://noidea.dog/glue Borg (Google-only, 95% of my "code" changes were in borgcfg or "borg config"), Python2 ### Programmer/Developer @ Hasbro - Wizards of the Coast Jan 2010 – Jan 2010 | Renton, WA I worked on the rules engine for Magic: The Gathering Online. Basically, making sure that the behavior of the online game matched the 200-page comprehensive rulebook for MTG as closely as possible. This rulebook was constantly being updated and extended as new content, cards, and game modes were developed and released. C++, Perl ### Data Analyst/Programmer @ Cloud Tower Capital Management Jan 2009 – Jan 2009 | Seattle, WA Analyzed trade data in attempts to improve upon CTCM's trading strategies. Perl, Java ### Teaching Assistant @ University of Washington Jan 2006 – Jan 2009 | Seattle, WA Led a section of ~20 students for CSE 142/143 each quarter, including summers. ### Student Technician @ University of Washington Libraries Jan 2006 – Jan 2007 | Seattle, WA Natural Sciences Library (now subsumed under the rest of Allen Library). Fantastic learning experience and a low-stress job with great coworkers. ## Education ### BS in Computer Science, Statistics University of Washington Jan 2005 – Jan 2009 ## Contact & Social - LinkedIn: https://linkedin.com/in/zeblith --- Source: https://flows.cv/jakeenglund JSON Resume: https://flows.cv/jakeenglund/resume.json Last updated: 2026-03-22
