I enjoy making contributions to system architecture and solving interesting and complex problems while continuing to develop my skill set. I am also looking to advance to roles of increasing responsibility and leadership. Opportunities in the field of aviation are of particular interest. Specialties: Object-oriented Java software design and development. Database design and application access using JDBC and SQL. Application optimization, clean-up, performance tuning, system integration. Aviation and ATC related subject matter. ## Work Experience ### Principal Software Engineer @ Clari Jan 2015 – Present | Sunnyvale, CA Clari’s Revenue Operations Platform uses AI and automation to help B2B organizations drive growth and retention by increasing win rates, shortening sales cycles and improving forecast accuracy. We are used by hundreds of sales, marketing and customer success teams at leading B2B companies including Adobe, Zoom, Dropbox, Alteryx and Okta to drive pipeline, improve execution, forecast the business and reduce churn. ### Principal Software Engineer @ Clari Jan 2015 – Present | Sunnyvale, CA ### Co-Founder, CFO, Code-Monkey, etc. @ PhilanthroPal Jan 2012 – Jan 2015 | Menlo Park, CA In late 2012 I was invited by a highly respected colleague to join him in starting a company. We settled on an idea that we hope will evolve our culture of philanthropy by empowering individuals to make charitable donation and fundraising a part of their everyday lives. So far it has proven to be a wonderful challenge and learning experience in many areas including cloud and PAAS computing, business formation and operation, non-profit operations and regulation, and mobile application development. Stay tuned... ### Principal Software Engineer @ Symantec Jan 2010 – Jan 2012 Formerly Clearwell Systems - I have participated in the design and development of various components of the Clearwell e-Discovery platform. Projects have included the solo design and construction of an internal system through which all partner billing is processed. Additional and current work has included implementing the migration process from a local local to shared DB implementation and substantial work on the applications authentication components including integrated Windows authentication. Additionally, I have attempted to initiate and facilitate engineering-wide discussions about how to improve our development process and tool-set to better serve our growing team and code-base. ### Senior Software Engineer @ University Affiliated Research Center Jan 2008 – Jan 2010 Lead a team of software engineers developing a simulation platform for the study of air traffic control in the national airspace system. Updated version-control tools and processes to significantly improve developer access allowing proper management of critical development tasks. Personally brought several existing large branches of development under version control and ensured proper integration. Made optimizations to significantly improve application performance, significantly refactored several parts of the application, and migrated to a standardized logging API. Encouraged developers to be more proactive in making application improvements and worked with developers to improve their implementations and coding best practices. Lead development of a client-server framework and application for a Human In-The-Loop simulation utilizing real airline dispatchers and collecting detailed data on user and simulation behavior. Reworked application features and algorithms for avoiding areas of airspace including significant improvements to performance, architecture, and overall functional behavior. ### Software Consultant, Student @ Self Employed Jan 2006 – Jan 2009 Data management and reporting consulting to Agilaire, Inc. of Redwood City, CA. Software development for BigTent Design, Inc. of San Francisco, CA. For my own interest I took several courses at San Jose State University in mechanical, electrical, and aerospace engineering. ### Member of Technical Staff @ Elemental, Inc. Jan 2005 – Jan 2006 • Worked on a team of highly skilled engineers and architects to develop and refine a new network monitoring and compliance product. • Redesigned and developed the platform’s host-attribute system, the backbone of the product’s data collection functionality. • Designed and developed LDAP integration functionality for pulling host-attribute data from customer directories. • Performed substantial application and DB performance tuning. • Rewrote complex compliance calculation system for better in-memory cached performance and later DB driven performance. ### Software Engineer @ InPhonic, Inc. Jan 2003 – Jan 2005 • Responsible for overall system data architecture. • Implemented a system for efficiently filtering user telephone call events for billing. • Researched and implemented Oracle 8i -> SQL Server migration. • Researched and implemented Mirapoint LDAP to OpenLDAP on Linux migration. • Reworked application DB connection pooling and initiated code factorization for several applications. • Researched and implemented a new mail server infrastructure to support > 20,000 users. • Designed and developed data migration procedure for major system upgrade and redesign. • Researched and designed a file-system storage architecture to support 20,000-1,000,000 users’ mail and application data. • Designed and executed a full data migration of 20,000 users for a major system architecture upgrade. ### Software Engineer @ Appiant Technologies, Inc. (Formerly Quaartz, Inc.) Jan 1999 – Jan 2003 • Designed and implemented a system to manage and allocate telephone numbers to users by region. • Assisted in redesign of a customer-support tool. • Heavily contributed to design and implementation of a complex billing system including most of the relational DB schema design. • Build Manager for all company applications. • Extensive work for Customer Support correcting and changing user accounts and developing tools and methods for managing users of our complex application. • Consultant to Branders.com for the design and construction of a new web store. • Managed web application set up and configuration including porting applications from WebLogic to Tomcat and Apache and streamlining the build process. • UI engineer sharing in the implementation of a complex JavaScript/DHTML application user interface. ### Contract Software Engineer @ Branders.com Jan 2000 – Jan 2000 Participated in the design and construction of a new web store utilizing Blue Martini to increase manageability, reliability, and scalability. This included middle-tier Java and JDBC development and development of processes for the migration of complex and inconsistent data from the old web store to the new one. ## Education ### BA in Computer Science Claremont McKenna College ## Contact & Social - LinkedIn: https://linkedin.com/in/james-courtney-7a7108 --- Source: https://flows.cv/jamescourtney JSON Resume: https://flows.cv/jamescourtney/resume.json Last updated: 2026-04-12
