# Jason Stine > Software Engineer, Fullstack Location: Pacifica, California, United States Profile: https://flows.cv/jasonstine Hi there! I specialize in the PERN stack (PostgreSQL, Express.js, React, Node.js) using both JavaScript and TypeScript to create React web apps as well as React Native Android/iOS apps. I love learning new technologies and am open to using other languages/frameworks/libraries of any team I join. I am an American based in San Francisco, California, who has previously lived in China and Hong Kong for 11 years. I have been known as a fluent technical liaison who can both communicate with highly technical engineers and in layman terms with customers. Over the past several years, I have also worked on and published my own Android and iOS app, LingoMap, a China map app for foreigners who cannot read Chinese, essentially a translation of Alibaba Maps that shows places/directions in Chinese, English, and Mandarin pinyin for pronunciation. This app has been promoted to and downloaded by thousands of users and established an enthusiastic user and fan base. I am acutely aware and sensitive of user experience and always striving to make the experience better. I am a leader and people person who understands technology. Earlier in my career, I did my own travel business and was a bilingual guide and trip leader in China, planning, organizing, selling, and leading over 80 large group trips and outdoor adventures with both foreigners and Chinese together, including domestic trips in China and abroad, such as in the Philippines, Egypt, and Japan. I know what customers want and need. I am also one of the most fluent foreign Mandarin speakers I know and can read/write Chinese without difficulty. I can help make your apps the best in the industry! Please see the Featured section to get a copy of my CV/resume as well as see the page titled "Jason's Tech Stack", which lists many of the technologies I am familiar with. ## Work Experience ### Senior Software Engineer @ Centivo Jan 2025 – Present | San Francisco Bay Area I currently work on many of Centivo's software ecosystem of apps - from the member-facing health insurance plan app (my.centivo.com) to the Centivo Care doctor-patient virtual care app to several other internal tools. The tech stack is generally JavaScript/TypeScript/React/Node/SQL/NoSQL/React Native and an extensive range of AWS services in addition to interfacing with several 3rd party healthcare and medical claim management services. ### Software Engineer @ Intuit Mailchimp Jan 2024 – Jan 2025 | San Francisco Bay Area I worked on Mailchimp's SMS marketing campaigns part of the app as a fullstack engineer. The tech stack I contributed to was JavaScript/React/Jest/React Testing Library/Playwright and GCP/Go/PHP/SQL/Twirp/gRPC. Even though I was strongest on the frontend and had never used Go, Google Cloud, or gRPC before, I quickly mastered these and independently managed Mailchimp's entire stack including adding more gRPC services and endpoints in Go that were covered with unit tests. ### Creator of China's First Reliable Bilingual Map App @ LingoMap Jan 2019 – Jan 2024 | United States I am the creator of LingoMap, a map app for foreigners who cannot read Chinese to use in China. It is a translation of Alibaba Maps (known as AMap and 高德地图). It shows place, transit route, and street names in the original Chinese, Mandarin Pinyin, and English. Previously called Lost Laowai, LingoMap grew from a simple single page application JavaScript web app started in 2016 to a modern and capable TypeScript React Native Android and iOS app. The app has an established following and user base among foreigners who are interested in traveling in China. ### Frontend Developer @ Binance Jan 2022 – Jan 2023 | United States I was mainly a JavaScript/TypeScript/React/Node frontend developer for Binance.com, the international version of the crypto exchange, as well as also had experience developing their backend systems. I was part of 3 major teams working on new user registration KYC (know your customer), KYB (know your business), and integrating web and Android/iOS Binance app end-to-end tests triggered via CICD pipelines. ### Senior Software Engineer, Fullstack @ Lalamove Jan 2021 – Jan 2022 | Hong Kong SAR My role has expanded to help work on more of the company's fullstack projects, mainly working with TypeScript, JavaScript, React, Vue, Node.js (Next.js), PHP and MySQL. Working hard to maintain code quality through merge request reviews, increasing unit test coverage, and as always continuing to learn more about what can go in the many layers of the stack! ### Engineer - Fullstack @ Lalamove Jan 2020 – Jan 2021 | Hong Kong SAR I worked as a React/Vue web frontend and PHP backend developer, mainly on web.lalamove.com, the web browser version of the well known Android/iOS apps people use to hail Lalamove couriers. I also communicated with Huolala 货拉拉 colleagues in Mainland China to help merge and unify our two platforms. ### Creator of China's First Reliable Bilingual Map App @ LostLaowai - Map App Startup Jan 2016 – Jan 2021 | Shenzhen, Guangdong, China LingoMap (previously Lost Laowai) is the first reliable bilingual map app for foreigners who have difficulties reading Chinese to use in China. Lost Laowai brings Alibaba Maps, also known as AutoNavi and 高德地图, to English speaking foreigners. Search for any place in China using English, pinyin, or Chinese, as well as receive directions and place information in those three forms. This solves a major pain point for foreigners in China as the big map app companies still haven't considered foreigner's language difficulties when it comes to getting around in the Middle Kingdom. "laowai" means "foreigner" in Mandarin. Learn more and download the app at https://lostlaowai.wixsite.com/home ### Software Engineer - Mobile App Developer @ EventXtra Jan 2019 – Jan 2020 | Hong Kong Worked with TypeScript and React Native to build EventXtra's check-in app for both iOS and Android. Responsible for almost everything related to the app on the front-end. ### Elementary School Teacher @ Montessori Model UN Jan 2017 – Jan 2019 | Shenzhen, Guangdong, China While I worked on my app and travel startups, I took a part-time job to sustain myself teaching in the Shenzhen public school system for the MMUN program. I taught students topics related to UN Sustainable Development Goals with the aim of making them "globally competent", mainly in English, but also sometimes in Chinese. I then helped to choose and be a judge for some of MMUN's brightest students participating in team debates against students from other schools. The winners of the competitions were then flown to New York City to participate in the final debate competition against children from other countries in the real United Nations headquarter's general assembly hall. I taught classes ranging from history, science, culture, technology, inequality, global warming - even international politics - at several different public elementary schools across Shenzhen to classes averaging 30-40 students aged 7 to 11 years old. I took on the responsibility of keeping so many restless kids focused and well managed, delivering course content and complicated concepts in clear and simple terms they could understand. Much of the content was created by myself. I would generally teach 2-3 classes a week during those years. This experience really made me appreciate younger children so much more as well as taught me how to effectively communicate with them. ### Founder @ Vista Adventures Jan 2015 – Jan 2016 | Shenzhen, Guangdong, China Vista Adventures is a startup I have worked on that has offered packaged trips, adventures, and tours both in and around China with both Chinese and foreign participants. We also offer customized tour planning and private tour guides/translators for hire. I have led over 80 group events/trips both domestically in China and abroad. You can see some of the events I've led by clicking on the Photobucket link below. The second link is a review with pictures of a previous trip I organized: our group trip to Egypt. ### Shenzhen Chapter President @ BEAN Jan 2013 – Jan 2016 In 2013 I launched a volunteering initiative called BEAN Shenzhen. I used to lead events for BEAN Shanghai and was inspired to start a similar organization here in Shenzhen. May 2016 - RIP BEAN Shanghai. You will be forever missed! Through BEAN Shanghai I learned what I was meant to do in this life - lead and organize events! ### Project Director @ BEAN Jan 2012 – Jan 2013 | Shanghai As a project director at BEAN Shanghai, I helped to lead one of the organization's most important volunteering events - Reading Buddies. Check out shanghai.beanonline.org to learn more about what BEAN Shanghai does and read event explanations. I attended most of the events the Shanghai chapter currently offers, and played a key role in the organization's development. ### User Experience Documentation Specialist @ OUTFORM Jan 2014 – Jan 2015 I made a full circle back to technical writing (since Ericsson and Sigma Tech), attracted by a fun opportunity to be the company's first documentation specialist in China. My job was to learn about all the exciting visual merchandising solutions Outform came up with, use these products and assemble them myself, and then write the product manuals. I had to communicate with the project managers and engineers of the various development teams at Outform very frequently in order to determine how best to present the company's products in words anyone can clearly and easily understand. I also worked closely with graphic designers to coordinate the creation of images and renderings that can accompany the text content of the manuals. I have overseen the creation of manuals for displays shipped to some of the world's most famous brands, as well as Outform's own brand of iDISPLAY commercial environment touch-screen tablets. ### International Project Manager @ DemoHour.com (点名时间) Jan 2014 – Jan 2014 I joined DemoHour.com, at the time China's largest crowdfunding website, as the company's first non-Chinese employee.
