At Jefferson Mack Metal, we utilize traditional blacksmithing techniques to produce beautifully distinct pieces of functional art. Each piece is forged at temperatures in excess of 2000 degrees and hammered by hand. Pliable when glowing hot, the iron is shaped into graceful, flowing forms. "I love to get lost in that red hot moment when the glowing steel comes out of the oven and I work it with the particular process I have designed for that piece, combining heat and pressure very precisely, watching carefully for an occurrence that surprises and teaches me! It's a short working window-It cools quickly and freezes into a permanent form. It's like catching the best single shot out of a movie reel of thousands of frames." The hammered texture of the metal evokes an historic mode and when blended with contemporary design, makes the work far from ordinary. Rather than produce what has been done before, we create new, surprising forms that embrace blacksmithing yet explore new ways of using the craft. These included the Rivet Mesh lighting fixtures, Rivet Fire place screens and tools and the Rivet handled Flatware and serving pieces. ### Blacksmith @ Michael Bondi Metal Design Jan 1990 – Jan 1991 I worked as an apprentice blacksmith in this well-established shop in Oakland CA. ### Blacksmith @ Kew Bridge Steam Museum Jan 1982 – Jan 1984 | London, United Kingdom I was a typical English blacksmith hammering away in the blacksmith shop for the tourists at this Victorian era water pumping station South of London, designed to pump the cleaner water of the Thames River, before it got to Central London, up a 6ft diameter pipe to a reservoir in Kilburn in North London where it could supply fresh water to most of London. The facility is now a steam museum as it used steam to power the 3 story beam engines that pumped the water up the pipe. ### Lighting Designer @ Freelance, self-employed Jan 1978 – Jan 1984 | USA Lighting designer for theater and rock and roll.
