# Jeremy Carroll > Cloud Architect Location: San Francisco, California, United States Profile: https://flows.cv/jeremycarroll Architect? Researcher? Technical Leader? Engineer? Yes all of these - I fill the role that is needed at the time. Likewise I move between fields: ontology; AI; machine translation; distributed systems; cloud-native. And I move between business domains: e-learning, health care, printing, software developer tooling. I have a passion for quality, and for regularly running automated tests. I understand concurrency. I have played a key role in the Semantic Web community. I helped develop the Jena Semantic Web framework. The value of data is realized by understanding how to collect it, structure it and curate it. I am enthusiastic about pure mathematics: algebra, logic, sets, geometry. My picture of six Venn triangles will be my most enduring achievement into the 3rd millennium. ## Work Experience ### Staff Engineer @ Coursera Jan 2019 – Present | Mountain View At Coursera, I have been energized by development in production. This resolves all bugs of the form 'cannot reproduce' because the development system and the production system are one-and-the-same. Can this be done safely, where production, development and test are virtual systems layered on top of a single host platform? ### Senior Principal Architect @ Syapse Inc. Jan 2016 – Jan 2019 | San Francisco, CA Using Semantic Web, BigData and the cloud for omics (genomics etc). My main responsibility is for the deep back end of the Syapse system, where the knowledge, about genomics, science and patients, is stored, managed and integrated. I am eager that we manage the quality of our data sufficiently to extract actionable knowledge to improve cancer care both for individual patients, and other patients cared for by Syapse customers. ### Principal Architect @ Syapse Inc. Jan 2013 – Jan 2016 | Palo Alto, CA My initial responsibility at Syapse was the migration of our healthcare knowledge bases from a DIY system, to a commercial triple store (blazegraph from Systap), to which I also made open source contributions. ### VP of Engineering @ TopQuadrant Jan 2011 – Jan 2013 | Mountain View, CA As the VP responsible for the development and delivery of TopBraid Live and TopBraid Ensemble, I led a drive to quality improvements, through better processes, automated build, automated testing, continuous integration, more systematic manual testing and improved communication. My role was very hands-on with substantial architectural and development responsibilities. I helped initiate a move to use of scrum within the development team. Managing the TopBraid product team, my tasks included: people management, release planning, defect tracking, liason with other functions (support, sales, marketing, training, CEO). ### Chief Product Architect @ TopQuadrant Jan 2008 – Jan 2011 | Mountain View, CA Key architectural decisions I have made are to make extensive use of: weak references, java.util.concurrent package and hierarchical deadlock prevention. The responsibilities of the two job-titles I had at TopQuadrant overlapped, and the promotion to VP of Engineering reflected what I was already doing. ### Senior Research Engineer @ Hewlett-Packard Jan 2001 – Jan 2008 | Bristol, United Kingdom From about 2000 I was a key member of HP's Semantic Web effort, and the Jena team. I also represented HP on several W3C working groups, and wrote several scientific papers concerning the Semantic Web and: graphs; internationalization; RDF/XML; provenance; OWL. I also published a few papers on geometry. Prior to 2000, I was involved in a variety of projects including clustered printing, telecoms billing systems, telecoms advanced intelligent network and knowledge based systems for pre-sales computer configuration. ### Editor: RDF Concepts and OWL Test Cases @ W3C Jan 2001 – Jan 2004 As the HP representative on two Working Groups at the World Wide Web Consortium I led the writing of these two recommendations. ## Education ### Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Computational Linguistics The University of Manchester ### Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Mathematics University of Oxford ### Master of Science - MS in Computational Linguistics The University of Manchester - Institute of Science and Technology ### Perse School Cambridge ## Contact & Social - LinkedIn: https://linkedin.com/in/jeremy-carroll-b1a4a063 --- Source: https://flows.cv/jeremycarroll JSON Resume: https://flows.cv/jeremycarroll/resume.json Last updated: 2026-04-12
