# Jeroen Soeters > Engineering @ Platform Engineering Labs Location: San Francisco Bay Area, United States Profile: https://flows.cv/jeroensoeters Experienced engineering leader with an extensive software development background. My experience ranges from small startups (Ad Channel); to consultancy (ThoughtWorks) to hyper-growth scale-ups (Instana). I started my career as a software engineer; over the last ~5 years, I have done a mix of IC and management work. As an engineering manager, I have experience growing engineering organizations from a single small team (10-15 people) to a large (100+ people) organizations, often fully remote and globally distributed across multiple time zones. I successfully delivered complex, large-scale projects spanning multiple teams. My software engineering experience varies from large-scale distributed systems (digital signage, insurance, retail, supply chain planning, APM) to systems programming (kernel instrumentation). I developed Instana's kernel instrumentation in Rust and eBPF, for which I was granted a patent. At Wise I work on integrating various major US banks into the Wise payment infrastructure using Java, Kotlin and Spring. On the side, I've dabbled around with AI, more specifically, neuroevolutionary systems (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5U0JNLpJn-8). I value: practicing kindness, having a bias for action, a culture of feedback, continuous improvement, rapid iteration and hypothesis driven development, and a safe space where the entire team is learning together. ## Work Experience ### Software Engineer @ Platform Engineering Labs Inc. Jan 2025 – Present | San Francisco Bay Area ### Engineering Lead @ Wise Jan 2024 – Jan 2025 | Austin, Texas, United States ### Engineering Manager @ Chronosphere Jan 2023 – Jan 2024 | Austin, Texas, United States Chronosphere builds an industry-leading observability platform for cloud-native applications. Chronosphere delivers 99.99% uptime to its customers and is trusted by companies like DoorDash, Snap and Robinhood. I managed the team responsible for the ingest and aggregation tier as well as the control plane which helps our customers dramatically reduce the cost of their observability data as well as improve performance. ### Engineering Manager @ InDebted Jan 2022 – Jan 2023 | Austin, Texas, United States I joined InDebted with the mission to build out the US engineering department. During my time at InDebted I: - hired and actively managed the performance and growth of a team of 5 software engineers - held regular 1:1's, quarterly check-ins and annual performance reviews with team members - successfully delivered custom API integration for a large BNPL client - successfully delivered internal back-office tool greatly improving efficiency of the client support teams - implemented a company-wide product support process and replaced a set of tools with a unified ticketing system - designed and implemented career progression framework across the entire engineering organization - designed and implemented company-wide OKR framework - implemented RFC process to facilitate asynchronous decision making between engineering teams across various time zones ### Senior Engineering Manager @ Instana Jan 2019 – Jan 2022 At Instana I was hired as the first engineer on the ground in the US and bootstrapped the US engineering office. I started in an IC role but gradually transitioned into an EM role as the US engineering team grew. - hired and actively managed 2 large backend teams (Infrastructure/metrics monitoring and Kubernetes monitoring) and a sensor team (proxy and kernel instrumentation) - held regular 1:1's, quarterly check-ins and annual performance reviews with team members - successfully delivered a large project where we replaced Instana's Cassandra based metric store with a custom-built metrics database - successfully delivered Instana's Kubernetes monitoring - successfully delivered Instana's Linux Kernel instrumentation - implemented career progression framework for the engineering org ### Senior Software Engineer @ Instana Jan 2017 – Jan 2022 | Austin, Texas Area Summary of my IC work at Instana: - designed and implemented the Instana Grafana datasource plugin - designed and implemented Instana's Linux kernel instrumentation using Rust and eBPF (https://patents.justia.com/patent/11507353) - contributed to Instana's Kubernetes monitoring - contributed to Instana's infrastructure monitoring ### Lead Consultant @ ThoughtWorks Jan 2013 – Jan 2017 | New York I joined ThoughtWorks in London early 2013. With ThoughtWorks I worked in the capacity of: - senior developer for one of the largest insurance comparison websites in the UK (C# .NET, Node.js, MongoDB, DDD, CQRS, event sourcing, micro services architecture) - senior developer based out of Istanbul for Turkey's largest online retailer adding marketplace functionality to their website (C# .NET, Couchbase, MongoDB, SQL Server, DDD, CQRS, micro services architecture) - tech lead for a large US-based retailer replacing their existing transactional e-mail system (Scala, Play, Akka, micro services architecture) - tech lead for one of the world's largest supply chain companies building a radically new approach for supply chain planning using cutting edge mathematical optimization combined with streaming technologies and micro services architecture (Scala, Postgres, RethinkDB, Python, DDD, CQRS, micro services architecture) - tech principal for a leading financial services firm (Java, Kafka, Sybase) ### Organizer @ FP Amsterdam Jan 2012 – Jan 2015 FP Amsterdam aims to bring together commercial users of functional programming. We want to support and promote functional technologies in the Dutch software industry. ### Software Architect @ Atos Jan 2013 – Jan 2013 | Eindhoven Area, Netherlands Via Atos I worked on the BioBank Information System at Maastricht University. The BioBank Information System is a web-based registration system for storage of materials. The BIS is developed for the BioBank and is therefore totally fine-tuned for the workflow of the BioBank. It fulfills all the requirements to store the samples in a structured and safe way. Much like my work with Sogyo this was a DDD and CQRS/ES type of project built on the Microsoft stack (C#, .NET 4.5, MVC4). After the BioBank project I developed a website for an NGO. We experimented with AngularJS, Twitter Bootstrap and RavenDB. ### Software Developer @ Sogyo Jan 2012 – Jan 2012 | De Bilt After successfully completing the internal master class software engineering I worked in a developer/ architect role on a project for a large insurer. I worked in a SCRUM team using a domain driven/ test driven style of development. I invested a substantial amount of time researching newer architectural styles and patterns such as CQRS (separation of read and write model as opposed to the classical n-tier approach), Event Sourcing (persisting state in a stream of events instead of in a structural, often relational model), hexagonal architecture and polyglot persistence and I have gained a lot of hands-on experience implementing these. Besides doing development I also did a fair bit of requirements analysis. ### CTO, Co-founder @ Ad Channel B.V. Jan 2005 – Jan 2012 | Geleen Ad Channel was founded in 2005 and is specialized in digital signage. In a nutshell: Ad Channel installs large TV screens at retailers and broadcasts all kinds of interesting content on these screens. At the moment Ad Channel is active in over 400 pharmacies in the Netherlands with a concept exclusively developed for pharmacies called Pharma Channel. At Ad Channel I was responsible for the technical side of the business. I developed the entire software stack from scratch: - player software - content distribution software - content management software - web portal for customers to manage their playlists and create movies I also was responsible for the hardware and installation. ### Developer @ 1 to 1 Communications Jan 2003 – Jan 2005 | Sittard ### Intern @ Indernet Design Nederland Jan 2001 – Jan 2001 | Maasbracht ## Education ### Computer Science Open Universiteit ### Zuyd University of Applied Sciences ## Contact & Social - LinkedIn: https://linkedin.com/in/jeroensoeters --- Source: https://flows.cv/jeroensoeters JSON Resume: https://flows.cv/jeroensoeters/resume.json Last updated: 2026-04-05
