# Jim Kavitsky > Infrastructure support of HPC Software Build and Machine Learning Clusters Location: Sunnyvale, California, United States Profile: https://flows.cv/jimkavitsky ## Work Experience ### Staff Software Engineer - OS Infrastructure @ Johnson & Johnson MedTech Jan 2022 – Present Optimization of Linux OS environment for Medical Device Product Platforms ### Sr Infrastructure Engineer @ Lucid Motors Jan 2022 – Jan 2022 | Hayward, California, United States Linus OS and related infrastructure support for software build farm and Machine Vision AI model training cluster - Nvidia GPUs, CUDA, etc. ### Sr Infrastructure Administrator @ 23andMe Jan 2016 – Jan 2022 ### Sr Unix Administrator @ Altera Jan 2013 – Jan 2016 | San Jose I am a Sr Unix Admin and jack of all trades within the Engineering Infrastructure Services department. I typically perform automated server builds using cobbler & puppet, with an eye on continuous improvement of these services. I do high level problem diagnosis & resolution for issues that get escalated to my team. This year I lead the planning and execution of our three day long Global Maintenance project for the San Jose headquarters. I also take on special projects including security remediation initiatives, as well as new infrastructure build-out in cloud service providers like Azure and AWS. My current major project is a POC for an effort it globally segregate the IP environments of our sensitive engineering data from the rest of the corporate network. ### Unix Operations Team Lead @ Brocade Communications Jan 2010 – Jan 2013 | SanJose, CA I am the team lead for the Unix Operations group in the San Jose corporate headquarters. My responsibilities include Solaris and Linux system administration, SAN fabric and storage array management utilizing Brocade, Hitachi, HP, Netapp, EMC, and Pillar arrays. I built out and managed our multisite Splunk systems, and am the primary resource for our Sun One LDAP and Infoblox external DNS systems. I have used VMware Vsphere to build out and manage many RH Linux clients. My responsibilities also included Unix on-call rotation, general Unix break-fix activities, as well as managing and farming out incoming Unix tickets to other team members. ### Lead Architect - New Campus Datacenter Migrations @ Brocade Communications Jan 2009 – Jan 2010 | San Jose, CA I was the lead technical architect for the migration of Brocade's three primary production DC's into a new DC at our new campus. My responsibilities in this role included documentation of the existing infrastructure and developing detailed plans to pre-consolidate the environment prior to the main move via virtualization, migration to other DC's, decommissioning of extraneous hardware, and upgrading servers in place. I managed the specification, sizing quoting and purchasing of seed equipment for the new DC, which included rack mounted & blade systems, storage arrays, SAN hardware and backup system components. I interview and made hiring decisions for additional CW team members for the project. I coordinated with application support teams and project PM's to construct detailed migration plans for each application that would maximize availability during the move. I also designed and implemented a trunked 32Gb/s SAN link over 17km of dark fiber to the new campus using optical CWDM equipment and tuned the link for optimal performance. It was this high speed link, in addition to the 40Gb Ethernet rings between DC sites that proved most critical to minimizing migration outages and allowing the multiple DC's to interoperate as one during the migration. This was the largest single project ever undertaken by Brocade's IT department, and was such a resounding success that marketing videos were made of this DC, and tours are still proudly given to this day. ### Manager - IT Operations @ Brocade Communications Jan 2006 – Jan 2009 I currently manage the Brocade IT Operations team for Unix systems, SAN storage, and backups. I am responsible for teams at four datacenters; two in San Jose, CA one in Broomfield, CO, and one in Plymouth, MN. I am still in a very hands-on roll with regard to systems planning and installation, complex problem resolution and technical communication with other groups. ### Sr Unix Administrator @ Brocade Communications Jan 2002 – Jan 2006 Helped to lead Unix Server team for all infrastructure issues including SAN storage, infrastructure planning, systems architecture, troubleshooting, dealing with problems or solutions that crossed functional boundaries into other groups. ### Sr Unix Administrator @ Sigma Networks Jan 2000 – Jan 2002 ### Sr Unix Administrator @ 3M Health INformation Systems Jan 1989 – Jan 1998 ### Sr Unix Administrator @ 3M Health INformation Systems Jan 1989 – Jan 1998 ### Sr Unix Administrator @ DSLnet Jan 1989 – Jan 1990 ## Contact & Social - LinkedIn: https://linkedin.com/in/jim-kavitsky-4870084 --- Source: https://flows.cv/jimkavitsky JSON Resume: https://flows.cv/jimkavitsky/resume.json Last updated: 2026-04-12
