# Jonathan Smiley > Product Design leader. Agency, ads, consumer, VR, retail, I was even a piano teacher once. Unironically bought into the Metaverse, just ask. Location: San Francisco Bay Area, United States Profile: https://flows.cv/jonathansmiley Currently at Walmart, connecting businesses with things they need. Prior to this I led multiple teams to deliver features for the Quest VR device and Metaverse. I focused heavily on social connections, but also led efforts around Metaverse creation, core navigation, device control, platform growth and more. I enjoy defining strategy through design, and I love growing designers skills and careers. I've held a variety of positions ranging from salesman to engineer, civilian in the Army to consultant with my own company. I created Foundation, an open-source front-end framework for building responsive sites and apps. ## Work Experience ### Head of Design, Walmart Business @ Walmart Jan 2025 – Present | Bentonvile Currently leading design for Walmart Business, bringing Walmart’s breadth of assortment and low prices to businesses across the US. ### Senior Design Manager @ Meta Jan 2023 – Jan 2025 | San Francisco Bay Area Led the team responsible for safety and integrity in the Metaverse, then led the team enabling creation for Horizon. ### Senior Design Manager @ Meta Jan 2018 – Jan 2023 | Menlo Park, California I led the team responsible for the foundations of a social Metaverse, including the digital representation of people, communication and connection tools, and travel mechanics. This team eventually comprised around 15, including three managers. We successfully set the social system vision for VR at Meta, and worked with every level of company leadership to align VR with other core products at Meta like Messenger. Prior to that, I led teams in VR that executed system navigation, controls, settings, design foundations and growth for AR/VR, with teams of varying sizes, many managed concurrently. Key achievements included the core navigation for the Quest 2, redesigns of the overall system settings, and the initial stages of the current VR system design language. ### Senior Product Designer @ Meta Jan 2016 – Jan 2018 | San Francisco Bay Area On the Facebook Youth team I worked on products aimed at teenagers who had predominantly abandoned the Facebook app, and we designed and tested both features and full products to learn more about their needs. I worked with UXR to understand a teenage audience worldwide, and we ran school and country tests on multiple efforts which contributed to our understanding of the challenges facing teens on social media, and how the company as a whole could better serve them while helping alleviate detrimental effects of social media. Prior to that I worked on Ads tools that served Facebook's largest advertisers, companies with spend in the millions. I executed a redesign of Business Manager, the tool those advertisers used for an overview of their ad accounts and performance. ### Principal UX Designer @ Quantcast Jan 2014 – Jan 2016 At Quantcast I was responsible for leading our product design work across all of our products in conjunction with our Director of User Experience. I contributed directly to the design of our upcoming products and in my time there was responsible for the redesign and launch of the new Quantcast Measure. I also developed and distributed within the company a new design framework to align our product efforts and produce the foundation of a consistent design language which informed all new product design work (and continued for some time after my departure). This required cross-functional buy-in from product leads as well as engineering. ### Partner @ ZURB Jan 2012 – Jan 2014 | Campbell, CA As Partner and Design Lead at ZURB I led projects with our designers, for our clients. I was also responsible for Foundation, ZURB's open-source front-end framework.
