# Josh Rubenoff > Digital product designer and motion designer Location: Oakland, California, United States Profile: https://flows.cv/joshrubenoff I'm a product designer and motion designer in Oakland, CA. For over a decade, I've served as a product design leader, cultivating an obsessive focus on team communication and a passion for the open web. I believe great design is only sustainable alongside a humane and inclusive team culture, so I’ve spent a lot of time helping teams with their internal tools and process. I also love putting design in motion through video or code. I’m equally comfortable finessing the details of a loading spinner or animating an explainer video from scratch. After having led brand design and UI animation for a few of my previous employers, I'm currently building up a body of motion work to showcase. ## Work Experience ### Owner / Sole Employee @ Final Final v2 Revised LLC Jan 2020 – Present | Oakland, California, United States Independent designer, writer and animator. Clients include Pacific Life, Kiva.org, Yoga Alliance, and the State of California Office of Digital Innovation. ### Senior Product Designer @ San Francisco Digital Services Jan 2018 – Jan 2020 | San Francisco, California I designed the first form on SF.gov, the city's new website: combining hundreds of form fields from five agencies into a streamlined permit application. As part of this work, I led product design for the team’s internal form-builder. I also built a separate, Jekyll-based rapid prototyping tool for larger and more complex government forms. When I first joined, the team was about to issue an RFP for a city-wide design system. I advised leadership on the work required to do so, and advocated for what should be done in-house. I also converted two component libraries to Fractal and ranked among their top contributors. I spent a good amount of my time on mentorship and facilitation. I gave presentations on critique and how to self-document your daily work. I also led workshops to establish the team's design principles, and started an “Org Design for Design Orgs” book club to foster discussions about culture. ### Design and Product Lead @ The Department of Better Technology, Inc. Jan 2016 – Jan 2017 On top of my responsibilities as a designer, I was promoted to serve as Screendoor's product lead. I defined and prioritized all product work, regularly meeting with customers and colleagues to inform my decision-making. I also facilitated workshops to establish our team's core values, and created a structured hiring pipeline based on Project Include's recommendations. CityBase acquired DOBT in September 2017. ### Design Lead @ The Department of Better Technology, Inc. Jan 2014 – Jan 2016 I was the first designer at this remote govtech startup. We mostly worked on Screendoor, a shared inbox for online form submissions. I created and taught a outcomes-oriented design process optimized for remote teams. I also designed, wrote documentation for, and refactored our CSS into a modular design system. ### Digital Designer @ Alere ACS Jan 2012 – Jan 2014 | Waltham, MA Alere ACS built an electronic health record (EHRs) and patient portal for the iPad and the web. I led prototyping, UI animation, design QA, and HTML / CSS development on most user-facing features. The team grew from 30 to 150 during my tenure, so I gained a lot of practice in these areas. To teach my skills to the rest of the company, I presented to colleagues on Git, UI animation, and component-driven design. I also led design on a few EHR features, and assembled an ad hoc team to advocate for a responsive web redesign of our patient portal. ### User Experience Lead @ codeREADr Jan 2011 – Jan 2012 | Boston, MA I was the sole designer and front-end developer for codeREADr, a barcode scanning app for enterprise. After a heuristic evaluation of our iOS and Android apps, I completely redesigned them both: restructuring the information architecture, revising all UI copy, and drawing a new icon set. To help implement my work on iOS, I tested and project-managed daily builds from an offshore development team. I also initiated and led a responsive redesign of codeREADr’s web app for back-office managers. ### Principal, UI / UX @ Liquify Digital Jan 2010 – Jan 2011 I designed an iPad app creation platform on spec for a stealth startup. My work helped win us early development agreements from Big Six media companies. ## Education ### Arts and Media Studies College of the Atlantic Jan 2006 – Jan 2008 ## Contact & Social - LinkedIn: https://linkedin.com/in/jrubenoff - Portfolio: http://jrubenoff.com --- Source: https://flows.cv/joshrubenoff JSON Resume: https://flows.cv/joshrubenoff/resume.json Last updated: 2026-03-25
