# Joshua Katz > Robotics Software Engineer | Controls and Motion Planning | Machine Learning and AI Location: Greater Boston, United States Profile: https://flows.cv/joshuakatz In robotics, we transform imagination into reality, creating intelligent machines that extend human capabilities and tackle complex challenges. As a full-stack roboticist, I bring this vision to life by commanding the complete range of skills from hardware design to software implementation. I design mechanical components and assemblies, manufacture custom parts, develop electronics systems, and write software that brings these elements together into functional robotic solutions. This end-to-end capability allows me to address problems holistically and develop more integrated, reliable systems. During my academic journey, I had the privilege of working with the Robotic Manipulation and Mobility Lab (ROAM) at Columbia University. There, I contributed to the development of a soft robotic snake that uses embedded tactile sensors and machine learning to navigate its environment. At Vicarious Surgical, I have applied my expertise to advance surgical robotics, working on technology that has the potential to transform minimally invasive procedures and improve patient outcomes. I'm always interested in connecting with fellow roboticists, engineers, and technology enthusiasts to exchange ideas and explore new possibilities. ## Work Experience ### Senior Software Engineer @ Vicarious Surgical Inc. Jan 2024 – Jan 2025 | Waltham, MA ### Software Engineer II @ Vicarious Surgical Inc. Jan 2021 – Jan 2024 | Waltham, MA ### Robotic Manipulation and Mobility Lab Researcher @ Columbia University in the City of New York Jan 2019 – Jan 2020 | New York, NY The purpose of this research position was to develop a soft robotic snake capable of sensing its environment through tactile sensing and navigating rough terrain. My main responsibility was to research and test various soft actuators for viability in a continuous bending mechanism of my own design. I have also done work to create a soft elastomer body that can house a tactile sensing system while still being sufficiently compliant for soft robotic purposes. Future work will include using machine learning to process tactile sensing information and inform motor action autonomously. ### Senior Design Course Assistant @ Columbia University in the City of New York Jan 2019 – Jan 2020 | New York, NY My main responsibility was to review the work of mechanical engineering students as they developed their capstone senior design projects and provide helpful feedback and consultation. The goal of these projects is to create a concept for a consumer product, communicate with potential customers to determine design parameters, develop a functional prototype, and determine a plan to manufacture the product on a mass production scale. Other responsibilities included grading submissions and presentations from each team, managing the ordering of parts and materials for student projects, and collaborating with the professor to reshape the course to better suit student needs. ### Mechatronics Course Assistant @ Columbia University in the City of New York Jan 2018 – Jan 2019 | New York, NY As a mechatronics course assistant, my main responsibilities were to aid students as they would work in the lab and grade their assignments. These assignments included building digital logic circuits, developing PID control systems for mechanical hardware, and programming in Assembly and Embedded C on PIC microchips for mechatronic applications. Outside of class, I would also perform repairs on lab equipment including electromagnets, solenoids, light sensors, and other electronics. ### Physics Lab Teaching Assistant @ Juniata College Jan 2016 – Jan 2017 | Huntingdon, Pennsylvania I assisted students with the use of lab equipment and computer software during lab time. Experiment topics included electronics, DC motors, optics, single and double slit interference, and spectrography. At times, I would perform brief lectures on physics topics relating to the lab to be performed. I was also responsible for grading the students’ lab notebooks. ### Math and Physics Tutor @ Juniata College Jan 2015 – Jan 2016 | Huntingdon, PA I provided one-on-one tutoring to students in various mathematics and physics courses, including Calculus I and II, Linear Algebra, and Physics I and II. Responsibilities include coordinating with tutees to organize a tutoring schedule and designing an individualized plan of action to improve each student’s performance in class. ## Education ### Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering: Robotics and Control Track Columbia University ### Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering Columbia University ### Bachelor of Science in Physics Juniata College ## Contact & Social - LinkedIn: https://linkedin.com/in/joshua-harrison-katz --- Source: https://flows.cv/joshuakatz JSON Resume: https://flows.cv/joshuakatz/resume.json Last updated: 2026-03-31
