# Julian Boilen > Senior Software Engineer seeking role in NYC or London julianboilen.com Location: New York, New York, United States Profile: https://flows.cv/julianboilen I’m a full stack software engineer in NYC with a love of design (both the software and visual kinds). I'm known for meticulous software architectures that build foundations for accelerating growth, and for working on creative, user-focused products. I helped Stripe Capital re-architect their frontend with best practices, managed complex requirements when building an intricate billing system at Squarespace, and set up a solid technical foundation for new products at startup FreeWill. On the side, I built a ‘street view’ of 1940s NYC using a collection of photos of every building in the city and incorporating thousands of user-submitted stories which has gone viral and featured in multiple press outlets. --- Because the social aspects of work and collaboration are important to me, I thrive best in-person and am not considering permanently fully remote work. However, I am open to moving to locations in Europe. ## Work Experience ### Software Engineer @ Stripe Jan 2022 – Jan 2025 | New York City Metropolitan Area Drove frontend platform modernization for Stripe’s small-business lending product—defined and rolled out modular patterns and guidelines that eliminated 2,000+ lines of legacy code and became the team’s new standard. Designed backend abstractions for extensible lendability checks, earning the Craftsmanship Award for meticulous systems design and mentorship. Led engineering efforts for a lending partnership launch through detailed roadmaps, task management, and stakeholder communication, and built a reproducible synthetic-test system safeguarding critical-path flows. ### Senior Software Engineer @ FreeWill Jan 2019 – Jan 2022 | Greater New York City Area As an early engineer, I created and implemented software patterns that built a solid foundation for rapid development of new and future estate planning products and expansion to new markets, including: a React-based PDF generator, an abstraction for step-based flows, using Tsoa and OpenAPI to generate RESTful routes and a typed frontend client library, a framework for internationalization and localization, and a screenshot-diffing testing system using Cypress. Raised $4B+ for charity. ### Senior Software Engineer / Team Lead @ Squarespace Jan 2018 – Jan 2019 | Greater New York City Area Launched a new team to research, design, and implement features to help businesses with a physical presence manage their online brand across online directory sites like Google Maps. On-boarded new hires and formulated new frontend design patterns in a greenfield project to slow the expansion of the company's monolith while appearing seamless to the end-user. Held regular scrum rituals and one-on-ones. ### Software Engineer @ Squarespace Jan 2015 – Jan 2018 | Greater New York City Area Deeply involved from the beginning in architecting and building a highly intricate event-sourced custom subscription billing system to accurately bill customers for Squarespace's several products (websites, domains, email, stock imagery) while maintaining a long history of millions of customers in an interminable number of states, producing accurate data for revenue recognition, and collecting global taxes. Worked full-stack across the whole Squarespace product throughout this time, keeping up with frontend trends. Leveraged microservice architecture, event-sourcing, Spring Boot, PostgreSQL, REST, Kubernetes, React, MongoDB ### Engineering Intern @ Squarespace Jan 2014 – Jan 2014 | New York, NY Worked full-stack developing new features, maintaining and refactoring code, and fixing bugs. Got to know the ins-and-outs of a large Javascript application and its RESTful backend in Java on top of a NoSQL database. Major projects included a careful mass-modification of almost 2-million customer websites and a clear accompanying interface for customers to understand and manage this change. Also worked closely with marketing to lead the software development of a unique referrals program with a clear UI and an intricate backend. ### Backend Development Intern @ Siteworx, LLC Jan 2013 – Jan 2013 ### Rapid Response Video @ Democratic National Committee Jan 2012 – Jan 2012 | 430 South Capitol St SE, Washington DC Worked as an intern on a small team creating and promoting rapid-response video web advertisements during the 2012 election season. Researched TV archives, edited videos, created animations and graphics, and promoted content on social media. Collaborated closely with others in a fast-paced campaign environment. ## Education ### Bachelor of Science (BS) in Computer Software Engineering Rochester Institute of Technology Jan 2011 – Jan 2015 ### Montgomery Blair High School Jan 2007 – Jan 2011 ## Contact & Social - LinkedIn: https://linkedin.com/in/julianboilen - Website: http://julianboilen.com --- Source: https://flows.cv/julianboilen JSON Resume: https://flows.cv/julianboilen/resume.json Last updated: 2026-03-23
