# Katherine Maslyn > Serving first-gen college students Location: San Francisco Bay Area, United States Profile: https://flows.cv/katherinemaslyn Previously a product designer in tech, now following my joy by working in my local community. ## Work Experience ### Education Product Designer @ Eastside College Preparatory School Jan 2025 – Present | East Palo Alto, California, United States Eastside College Prep is a 501(c)(3) high school in East Palo Alto, CA for first-generation college students underrepresented in higher education. Eastside is committed to the long-term success of its alumni, supporting alums through college and as they launch their professional careers. I'm using my product design and content skills to canonicalize the Eastside Alumni coaching team's best practices into approachable, actionable, gen-Z friendly guides to topics such as: - Interviewing - Networking - Job applications - Course registration - Transfers to 4-year colleges ### Volunteer @ Eastside College Preparatory School Jan 2024 – Present | East Palo Alto, California, United States ### Strategic Partnerships Manager @ Eastside College Preparatory School Jan 2024 – Jan 2025 | East Palo Alto, California, United States I stepped into this role for 6 months during a coworker's parental leave. I worked with Eastside's partners in the nonprofit, corporate, and government spaces to understand their hiring needs, and match them with outstanding Eastside alumni candidates for internships. We successfully placed ~100 first-gen college students in internships that season. ### Product Designer @ Meta Jan 2016 – Jan 2023 | Menlo Park, California I worked on 3 teams at Meta, formerly Facebook: Messenger design, Ads design, and Responsible Innovation. I also mentored 8 junior designers and taught workshops in Women of Facebook Design. On Responsible Innovation, we taught teams at Meta how to anticipate and prevent harms as a routine part of building for 3B people. We asked them to consider fairness, inclusion, safety, well-being, economic security, privacy, autonomy and more. Culture shift at an 80K-person company isn’t easy. I led some of our team's most notable successes: an education program for 20K+ employees, with 60% reporting applying the learnings 3 months later; a resource library with best practices from academia and experts; and guidance about building thoughtfully for COVID-19, also shared externally as an example of our team’s work. ### Interaction Designer @ Google Jan 2014 – Jan 2016 | Mountain View, California Made complex enterprise products as intuitive and as beautiful as consumer products. On the side, I redesigned Google’s internal live Q&A tool, refreshing a 2008 layout that predated smartphones. My new design spanned Android, responsive web, and large presentation displays, and was used by Larry & Sergey at Google's weekly all hands, and at internal events large and small. I also helped create a space for ad-hoc cross-functional collaboration between UX, PM, and Eng. It became a hub for sketching, sprints, and some of our team’s best work. I taught a class on creating these spaces at Google’s 2015 internal design conference. Peer recognition: 1 spot bonus, 20 peer bonuses, Google Citizenship Award nominee. ### Product Designer @ Ness Computing Jan 2011 – Jan 2014 | Los Altos, California Best Apps of 2012 (Apple, 2012), Editor's Choice Award (Apple, 2013). Acquired by OpenTable in 2014. Ness was a personalized search engine for restaurant recommendations based on dining history and preferences. I designed web and iOS features, working closely with the frontend, backend, and machine learning teams. Because Ness was a small team, I also wore PM, research, and marketing hats. One of my favorite projects was working with the ML team on a tagging system that could describe any given restaurant in the US. It was a key factor in Ness’ acquisition in 2014. ## Education ### Bachelor of Science - BS in Business Administration University of California, Berkeley ## Contact & Social - LinkedIn: https://linkedin.com/in/katherinemaslyn - Portfolio: http://katherinemaslyn.com --- Source: https://flows.cv/katherinemaslyn JSON Resume: https://flows.cv/katherinemaslyn/resume.json Last updated: 2026-04-13
