# Kat Moynahan > Strategic Design Advisor | Helping B2B and B2C startups scale UX and improve cross-team product development. Location: San Francisco Bay Area, United States Profile: https://flows.cv/katmoynahan Hi there! I'm a fractional design leader who partners with B2B and B2C startups to evolve product experiences and optimize cross-functional collaboration. My career has evolved along with emerging technologiesโ€”from print to web to mobile and beyond. A scholarship to study design (CCA, MFA Design 2013) moved me from Vancouver to the Bay Area. In the years following, I held lead design roles at Accenture Tech Labs, JPMorgan Chase, and Microsoft, architecting next-gen experiences for data viz, fintech, privacy, AI, XR, and spatial audio. Today, as a strategic design advisor and player-coach, my strengths include customer research, cross-team collaboration, and end-to-end product design. I work with startups on product and service audits, scaling user experiences, and applying design best practices fine-tune their offerings. Each week, I host The Portfolio Sessions, free online meetups where creative professionals connect to share resources and develop their portfolios and job search strategies. By cultivating positive, trusted environments, I encourage people to explore, grow, and do their best work. I led UX for immersive audio, partnering with engineering, design, and product to build natural, location-appropriate communication experiences that scale across productivity use cases. I led cross-market research and design initiatives with an emerging tech innovation team at JPMorgan Chase, a Fortune 500 financial institution. The Privacy, Cybersecurity, and Identity (PCI) Working Group aims to influence the development of PCI standards for the metaverse by aligning technical, legal, and human-centered discourses and practices, considering both traditional and contemporary approaches. As chair, I am responsible for facilitating meetings, driving alignment and guiding progress on group initiatives, and communicating across the MSF. ### Senior Product Designer, Mesh for Teams @ Microsoft Jan 2022 โ€“ Jan 2024 | United States I designed key features in Mesh for Teams, Microsoft's immersive experience platform for enterprise productivity. Persona development, journey maps, user flows and end-to-end prototypes are my toolkit for driving stakeholder alignment and feature development. I led the design for sharing and displaying apps and 2D content inside immersive spaces. I also collaborated on strategic customer scenarios and journeys to envision future features and experiences, creating frameworks for assessing product direction. In early 2024, I collaborated with a cross-disciplinary team to ship Mesh for Teamโ€™s Spatial Audio platform for the 0-1 release. Through design processes and artifacts, we identified opportunities for the audio, visual and environmental feature stack to make immersion feel real and enable natural conversations. I provided guidance to other product designers and engineers to build out this complex feature stack and ensure product vision was maintained. We were invited to speak at AWE to share our spatial audio use case with the international XR community. I was also an active participant in Microsoft's mentorship program, providing career development guidance to junior designers across the Mixed Reality team. ### Senior Experience Strategist, Design & Customer Experience @ J.P. Morgan Chase Jan 2015 โ€“ Jan 2022 | San Francisco I led and contributed to key strategic initiatives across omni-channel experiences at JPMorgan Chase. I worked across several lines of business and financial services: authentication, automated offers, BNPL, collections, data privacy and security, fees, financial health, and wealth management. I collaborated with the experience strategy director and other team leads on hiring, project resourcing, team strategic direction and process improvement. I mentored junior strategists and designers to hone their craft, learn about financial services, and develop their careers. Key Impacts Chase wanted to understand customer data literacy and incubate new products to meet customer needs. I planned and facilitated generative customer research across three US markets, and developed customer mindsets and a product vision based on those findings to secure further project funding. I then led a multi-disciplinary agile team to build out a proof-of-concept and piloted with 200 internal participants to determine tech feasibility and customer desirability. This work contributed to a patent granted for an AI-driven privacy policy manager in 2023: https://patents.google.com/patent/US11704439B2/en Chase wanted to build out an automated underwriting capability, and needed to understand how customers would accept personalized borrowing. I planned and executed the discovery research, and defined design principles, mindset/archetypes, and customer journeys to develop the product. I led a multi-disciplinary agile team to design and develop the MVP pilot now know as Chase Offers. The pilot ran in four US markets over six months in 2018, resulting in a 97% exploration rate that helped to fine tune the technology. Digital Customer Experience wanted to foster connection and inspiration among the team. I incubated and launched a 2-day internal, all-hands design conference by setting thematic direction, securing keynote speakers, and directing 50+ volunteers to realize and run the conference. ### Research Analyst / Developer @ Accenture Technology Labs Jan 2013 โ€“ Jan 2015 | San Jose, California Accenture Analytics needed to up-skill their team to compete in the rapidly changing data insight landscape. I developed a visual literacy program of online courses, hands-on workshops and a digital community of practice to create data visualization and storytelling literacy. I traveled globally to teach and build Accenture community (now at ~12K members and growing). The program is required learning for all new AA employees. I also explored leading-edge data analysis and visualization with engineers and data scientists to provide data-driven insights for various industries and audiences. Highlights include winning the MIT/Accenture OpenData Challenge, City of Chicago in 2014 with an interactive map that plotted 311 call data. ### Design Instructor @ Vancouver, BC Jan 2008 โ€“ Jan 2011 | Vancouver, BC, Canada I was an active member of the design education community in Vancouver for three years. During that time, I taught interface design, typography, and design strategy at several schools, including Simon Fraser University, Vancouver Film School and Langara College. I love teaching and it was one of the drivers to get my MFA: so I could teach at a collegiate level. Hopefully I will revive this aspect of my career in the future! ### Senior User Experience Designer @ Habanero Consulting Group Jan 2006 โ€“ Jan 2010 I was a lead UX designer at one of the top consultancies in Vancouver, Canada. I created user-focused designs for websites and intranets for a diverse client base, such as BC Hydro, Bennett Jones LLC, Boston Pizza, Canadian Pacific, Enbridge Gas, Fortis BC, Vancity Credit Union, and the Workers Compensation Board of BC. Highlights include winning the Top Ten Best Intranets, 2011 and Intranet Innovations Platinum Award, 2011, for BenNet, a corporate intranet and knowledge center that smartly tracked and scored legal documents for Bennett Jones LLC. Habanero was known for testing unified designs with end users to ensure designs were usable, attractive and functional, while also being accessible for the target population. I was also responsible for hiring and mentoring junior designers throughout specific client projects. I training them in design processes, procedures, and philosophies while directing work with clients. ### Graphic Designer @ Mountain Equipment Co-op Jan 1999 โ€“ Jan 2004 This is where it all began! I designed a wide range of marketing and creative materials for Canadaโ€™s leading outdoor equipment provider. I was drawn to MEC because of their sustainability mission, and was thrilled to design catalogs, brochures, garment hang tags and environmental signage with the lightest environmental impact possible. Sometimes they would let me design ski pole graphics and go on press checks! This is where I honed my skills in typography, information design, style guides and team collaboration. Best part of the job? Choosing photographs for the MEC catalog from membersโ€™ collections. Nice work if you can get it. ## Education ### Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Design California College of the Arts ### Diploma in Publishing Techniques and Technologies Langara College ### BFA in Visual Arts Simon Fraser University ## Contact & Social - LinkedIn: https://linkedin.com/in/kathleenmoynahan - Portfolio: https://www.katmoynahan.com --- Source: https://flows.cv/katmoynahan JSON Resume: https://flows.cv/katmoynahan/resume.json Last updated: 2026-04-13
