# Khanh Cao > Senior Product Manager at Ludi Inc. | UI/UX Design | Design Systems Location: San Francisco Bay Area, United States Profile: https://flows.cv/khanhcao If you had told me when I was younger that I’d be obsessed with a thermostat, I would have laughed because how can a thermostat be that impressive? LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT My product designer journey started before I even knew what product design was. I had stumbled upon the Nest thermostat at an open house and immediately knew I wanted one. The design was not only sleek but also very easy to use. What more could I want? It wasn’t until a few years later that I discovered the issue: the app. THE FATAL FLAW Originally, the Nest had its own app, which did its job but was extremely difficult to set up. Then Google acquired the Nest and switched the app connection to the Google Home app. The user experience for Nest mobile went from meh to bleh. I was insulted. How could such a great product have such a terrible mobile experience? This is what started my journey into the UI/UX world. I wanted to make experiences that gave me the same feeling I got when I was using the Nest product, not the Nest app. I wanted to figure out a way to make experiences like setting up a smart thermostat easier for everyone, including older users like my parents. A HAPPY COINCIDENCE At the end of 2022, I saw a post that made me truly believe in the benefits of UX research. Google had finally listened to their users and redesigned the Google Home app to make it easier to manage and control smart home devices. Just from the preview I had seen, it was leaps and bounds better than what it was before. I’m so happy that I get to be a part of the process to make easier to use experiences.
