# Liana Engie > Life Scientist / Engineer Location: San Francisco, California, United States Profile: https://flows.cv/lianaengie I'm a data scientist specializing in life science data, stakeholder management, and translating between technical teams. My primary interests are quantitative biological sciences, science policy, and communication. I work at Betteromics, supporting scientists with their data management and scaling up analysis pipelines. I manage external customers and program manage internal teams. My graduate research looked at whether RNA transcripts from non coding regions of the DNA contribute to their regulatory function. It was a combination of bioinformatics, modeling, and molecular biology benchwork. I also think it's very important to be mindful of science beyond the confines of the lab and academic world, and consequently am quite active in the National Science Policy Network. On the other hand, I have experience in intercultural exchange and international education. Teaching and intercultural exchange both were woven into several of my activities and positions. Intercultural communication skills are important when working both internationally and domestically regardless of what field you're in. Projects cannot succeed without understanding the context in which they exist and the perspectives of those working on it. Clear and efficient communication is something I foster in every relationship. Beyond my work in the sciences and international education, I find myself drawn to continuously learning and refining skills. In my spare time I mess around with code, work on design projects, catch up on scientific articles, and analyze Indonesian current affairs with friends. I also consume books with a voracious appetite. I'm always on the lookout for more book/graphic novel/strategy board game recommendations! ## Work Experience ### Software Developer @ Apple Jan 2024 – Present ### Referee / Judge @ USA CYCLING | Official Governing Body Jan 2022 – Present | Northern California & Nevada Officiating duties for bicycling races. Referee, judge, finish line camera, or radio tour for primarily road and track cycling but with experience in mountain biking and cyclocross. Making sure race conditions are safe and fair as well as determining final race results. Awarded 2024 Northern California & Nevada Official of the Year. ### Customer Success Engineer @ Betteromics Jan 2022 – Jan 2024 | Redwood City, California, United States I work as a liaison between our engineering+product teams and customers in biotech, pharma, and biologics manufacturing. Daily work includes triaging support issues, product discussions, go to market initiatives, and software engineering. ### Region 7 Representative & Transportation Liaison @ Mid City Neighborhood Council Jan 2020 – Jan 2022 | Los Angeles, California, United States Representing LA's lowest level of government. Grassroots advocating for the Mid City community to the broader city, county, and state government. Working to ensure that locals are aware of government programs available to them, and initiating projects for our local community such as clean ups, mural festivals, highlighting local art, supporting the unhoused, advocating and grant applications for more green space. ### Graduate Student Researcher @ University of Southern California Jan 2015 – Jan 2022 | Los Angeles, CA I do computational biology, bioinformatics, and developmental genetics at USC's Translational Imaging Center under Dr. Scott E. Fraser. I'm working on a project of my own design, studying if/how RNAs affect the mechanism of enhancer regions of non coding DNA in regulating transcription. I am also studying enhancer RNA folding. ### Freelance Writer/Designer/Translator @ Self-Employed Jan 2015 – Jan 2015 | Jakarta, Indonesia Editing, translation for companies and newspapers, technical copy writing, documentation for software, graphic design for book covers or commercial labels. ### Short Term Consultant @ World Bank Group Jan 2015 – Jan 2015 | Jakarta, Indonesia On a team of two people, I created a report on Indonesian governance and political economy to inform the World Bank's Systematic Country Diagnostic (SCD) for Indonesia. This involved literature research, interviews, political analysis, and intensive writing. We analyzed the working drafts of the SCD for places that needed stronger integration with governance analysis and laid out recommendations for how the World Bank should approach its goals within Indonesia. ### Faculty of Science and Technology Coordinator @ Putera Sampoerna Foundation Jan 2012 – Jan 2014 | Jakarta, Indonesia I was one of two founding members of the Faculty of Science and Technology at Sampoerna University (formerly Universitas Siswa Bangsa Internasional) in Jakarta. As essentially an internal consultant, my projects ranged from facilities planning and development, study program development, feasibility study creation, market research, student recruitment, marketing, external relations, budget, Indonesian and USA accreditation, curriculum development, finance, policy development, and more. ### Fulbright Scholar @ U.S. Department of State Jan 2011 – Jan 2012 | Pontianak Area, West Kalimantan, Indonesia As an English Teaching Assistant to Indonesia in West Kalimantan, I co-taught English classes to 10th graders. I also lead English club, a cooking club, and ran activities at the American Corner (US State department initiative) at Universitas Tanjungpura. These included English classes for community members, an American culture club, film screenings, and essay competitions. ### Computational & Cellular Biology Researcher @ Pitzer College Jan 2008 – Jan 2011 I was a student researcher in Jennifer Armstrong's lab at the Joint Science Department of the Claremont Colleges. Working with Drosophila melanogaster, I learned a variety of cellular biology techniques and developed a fluorescence microscopy project. I wrote a program to quantify fluorescence across multiple channels in microscopy images, negating background and nonspecific antibody staining. I also created a graphic user interface for the program. Presented this work several times, including Drosophila Conference 2011. ### Physics and Biology Tutor @ Pitzer College Jan 2008 – Jan 2011 Pitzer College's Physics and Biology tutor, as well as tutoring for the Joint Science Department of the Claremont Colleges. I held several sessions of office hours a week, tutoring introductory Biology and Physics courses. I also was a grader for Physics. ### Pitzer College in Nepal student @ Pitzer College Jan 2010 – Jan 2010 I studied Nepali culture and language intensively, then did a month-long independent project regarding the current state of education in Nepal. ### Honnold/Mudd Library Service Assistant @ Claremont University Consortium Jan 2007 – Jan 2011 | Claremont, California I worked at the library, primarily assisting users with library services. I was also the manager of the microfiche storage revamp project in 2010. ### REBMI Scholar/Math Biology Research @ University of British Columbia Jan 2009 – Jan 2009 Working for Eric Cytrynbaum at University of British Columbia, I mostly did cell biology lab work. This involved fluorescence microscopy of minD and minE E.Coli mutants. Reviewing previous work and data, improving lab techniques, creating and analyzing fluorescence microscopy videos. After working in the lab I worked from abroad, doing code writing in Matlab and fluorescence analysis. Presented this work at the Society of Mathematical Biology Conference 2009. ### Physics Researcher @ Pitzer College Jan 2008 – Jan 2008 | Claremont, California I worked with three other student researchers on a physics-based approach to game theory in Adam Landsberg's lab. Through Matlab we modeled Four-Row Chomp and used recursion and other applied mathematics tools to study patterns and further solve the combinatorial game. I presented this work at the Dynamics Days 2009 conference. ## Education ### Masters of Science in Computational Biology University of Southern California ### BA in Molecular Biology & Physics Pitzer College ### GED Foothill High School ## Contact & Social - LinkedIn: https://linkedin.com/in/lianaengie --- Source: https://flows.cv/lianaengie JSON Resume: https://flows.cv/lianaengie/resume.json Last updated: 2026-04-11
