# Mahdi Ben Hamida > Building Lanai: The Enterprise AI Observability and Security Platform. Empowering CIOs, CISOs, and business leaders with real-time insight into how AI is used. Trust, safety, and performance start with visibility. Location: Redwood City, California, United States Profile: https://flows.cv/mahdibenhamida I have written and run, in production, various very large scale distributed systems. My areas of interest/expertise - distributed systems and scalable architectures - storage systems - high performance systems - real-time streaming systems ## Work Experience ### Founding Engineer | Head of Distributed Systems @ Lanai Jan 2025 – Present | Palo Alto, California, United States The future of work isn't about humans versus AI, or even humans using AI. It's about empowering humans to achieve the extraordinary in the age of AI. We are building for the future at Lanai. Come join us. ### Senior Principal Engineer @ Splunk Jan 2023 – Jan 2025 I'm the overall technical lead for Splunk O11y metric storage systems. I was the architect behind O11y's archived metrics tier, a cheap storage tier for massive timeseries data ingest that went to production in April 2024. I'm currently leading Splunk's next generation O11y metrics storage architecture, an ambitious project to fundamentally change how we process and store timeseries data. ### Principal Engineer @ Splunk Jan 2019 – Jan 2023 ### Principal Engineer @ SignalFx Jan 2015 – Jan 2019 SignalFx was acquired by Splunk on October 1st, 2019 I'm currently the technical lead of SignalFx's streaming analytics system - designed and wrote the metadata streaming query engine that allows SignalFx's customers to see metadata updates in real time. This was a critical piece of SignalFx's analytics realtime capabilities. - worked on various memory optimizations to reduce metadata footprint in analytics (orders of magnitude improvements). - wrote the core timeseries datapoint retrieval code - mentored other engineers in the team to deliver other key capabilities of SignalFx's analytics backend 2015 - 2017: Technical lead of SignalFx's metadata system - scaled the metadata system from millions of objects to billions of objects - wrote a queuing system that dynamically prioritized write fan outs to maximize resource utilization and ensure fairness in a multi-tenant environment ### Staff Engineer II @ VMware Jan 2014 – Jan 2015 Technical Lead of the vSphere Content Library ### Staff Engineer @ VMware Jan 2011 – Jan 2014 Cloud Computing ### Senior Software Engineer @ VMware Jan 2010 – Jan 2011 Cloud Computing with a focus on Performance and Scalability ### Software Engineer II @ VMware Jan 2009 – Jan 2010 Cloud Computing R&D, Distributed systems, Concurrency, Multi-threading, Synchronization, Reliability&Availability ### Software Engineer @ VMware Jan 2008 – Jan 2008 Software development in C#. Worked on VMware's LabManager and StageManager products. ### Software Engineer @ Cataphora Jan 2006 – Jan 2007 Worked on the improvement of Cataphora's electronic discovery and review platform. Developed software in Java. Wrote shell/perl and python scripts to automate operations. ### Software Engineer intern @ Cataphora Jan 2006 – Jan 2006 Java development and test automation. ### Software Engineer Intern @ Sagem communication Jan 2005 – Jan 2005 C development of a CUPS driver (Linux) for a photo printer. C++ Development of a GUI application to monitor printer status. ### Treasurer @ Junior-Enterprise N'SIGMA Jan 2005 – Jan 2005 Managing finances (60.000 euros of revenue in 2005). ## Education ### Exchange Studies in Software specification & design, Linux kernel development, computer security Clemson University ### Master's in Computer Science National School of Computer Science and Applied Mathematics of Grenoble ### IPEST ### LPS ## Contact & Social - LinkedIn: https://linkedin.com/in/mahdi --- Source: https://flows.cv/mahdibenhamida JSON Resume: https://flows.cv/mahdibenhamida/resume.json Last updated: 2026-04-05
