I was a Resident Assistant (RA) in a first-year residence hall for three semesters. As an RA, I was responsible for fostering a sense of community among residents, addressing resident concerns and helping them navigate their first year at college, and enforcing residential life policy in the building.
I planned and facilitated a number of events and discussions, including regular floor meetings as well as events focused on building skills necessary to be successful at college or exploring how to communicate across cultural differences. I met with residents on my floor twice a semester one-on-one to build better relationships with them, understand their goals and struggles, and provide what advice I could to help them achieve those goals.
I worked on a team of 12 and met frequently with my colleagues and my supervisor to communicate potential issues with them. Additionally, once or twice a week I was "RA on Duty," and remained in a public location in the building in case residents needed help, as well as patrolled through the residence hall to proactively address and building or resident issues.
