I worked on the Parallel Query Framework and necessary SQL Execution framework to facilitate queries in ORACLE RDBMS to execute in parallel.

As a member of the Parallel Query group my day to day activities included
- improving the Oracle rdbms by adding new features and optimizations 
- fixing any urgent customer/internal issues
- mentoring new hires and help them become productive members of the team.

I worked on following key things:

1) Avoid slave accumulation for Parallel Queries with scalar sub-queries 
    Certain parallel SQL execution plans displayed accumulation of slaves (processes to which workload 
    is distributed) during execution leading to wastage of resources. I reorganized execution framework 
    to make sure we successfully execute such queries and without leading to accumulation of slaves.
2) Partition wise DISTINCT operation
    Partition wise operations have certain advantages over non-partition wise operations. Oracle 
    supports partition wise operations for various constructs like Group BY. I extended partition wise 
    execution semantics to distinct aggregate leading to better plans for queries over partitioned tables.
3) Rectify issues in parallel skew handling by revisiting the design and adding improvements.
4) Modify existing execution plans to improve performance for queries involving MIN/MAX
    over partitioned tables.
5) Improve user visible Parallel Query statistics by improving stats coverage to entire query 
    execution and making statistics correct for certain scenarios.
