# Marat Komarov > Observability @ Gusto Location: San Francisco, California, United States Profile: https://flows.cv/marat During my career, I played key engineering roles in the development of 2 software products within the cloud infrastructure domain. Highlights: * Formed and led the SRE team, that delivered observability, internal development platform, and CI/CD pipelines for the core product. * Technical leader and product manager during the organization's pivot. Launched the MVP for the new product. * Technical leader of the software platform, providing managed databases (MySQL, PostgreSQL, MongoDB), caches (Redis, Memcached), and message broker (RabbitMQ) services on top of a customer's cloud computing infrastructure (AWS EC2, Rackspace/Openstack, Google Cloud, Cloudstack) ## Work Experience ### Software Engineer @ Gusto Jan 2023 – Present ### SRE Lead @ Scalr Jan 2022 – Jan 2023 | San Francisco Bay Area Formed an SRE team from several (previously) backend engineers. The Team delivered so far: - Internal PaaS for developers and QA. 40K+ cloud devbox provisions in 12 mon with 99% success rate. Positive impact on the organization's SDLC time. - Consolidation and complete re-engineering of CI/CD pipelines: Jenkins, Drone 0.8, DIY -> GitHub Actions. Self-hosted runners in Kubernetes. - Observability platform for production and dev environments composed of interconnected DataDog, GrafanaCloud, and Sentry. Integrated toolset for developers: metrics, logs, traces, profiles. - Performance optimization project. Identified bottlenecks in systems, and re-engineered them for better performance and throughput. Achieved x2-10 performance gains in content ingest pipelines and high-loaded API endpoints. ### Individual Contributor @ Scalr Jan 2021 – Jan 2021 | San Francisco Bay Area Burnt out. Stepped away from the PM role, and returned to engineering. Built a short-living project team whose goal was to modernize the exitsing large Python codebase. Drove the team toward creating a holistic view of the application. The team has refactored tens of thousands lines of code, improving the internal quality of the core platform. Personal contribution in the project: - Produced architectural diagrams on systems, layers, and components. - Wrote API design document: semantics, features evolution, binding to implementation: flask, pydantic, peewee ORM. - Wrote concurrency guide, outlining recommended patterns for corotines (gevent), threading and multiprocessing in the Python backend. - As a showcase of the new foundation, refactored Workspaces API ### Product Manager / Architect @ Scalr - Collaboration and Automation for Terraform Jan 2019 – Jan 2021 | San Francisco Bay Area I have participated in a small product discovery team, whose objective was to define the scope of the company’s new product and deliver the MVP. I wore both product and engineer hats. After 6 months, we successfully launched the new product https://www.scalr.com/ After the launch, lead a feature team. Did user research, wrote PRD, oversaw UI/UX design, and engineering execution. The team built several features from the ground: terraform cloud cost estimation framework, and catalog of terraform apps. ### Director of Engineering @ Scalr - Collaboration and Automation for Terraform Jan 2016 – Jan 2019 | San Francisco Bay Area Overseen 3 backend teams. Launched several new sub-products targeted at the enterprise market, namely: cloud cost optimization, Kubernetes infrastructure management, and cloud credentials audit. Those new products helped Scalr CMP to win the competition over other vendors and land several Fortune 500 companies as customers. Advocated organization delivery transformation from DIY process to Agile methodology. Together with HR hired agile coaches, organized workshops, and designed new teams layouts. Wrote the new delivery process document. As a result of our joint efforts with team managers, the lead time was reduced x2. ### Python Team Lead @ Scalr - Collaboration and Automation for Terraform Jan 2011 – Jan 2016 | Lviv, Ukraine Designed a service for orchestrating cloud database deployments (e.g. Database-as-a-service) for MySQL, PostgreSQL, Redis, and MongoDB. Provisioning, backups, point-in-time recovery. Database scaling: Master-slave replication, replica promotion, failovers. ### Python Developer @ Scalr Jan 2008 – Jan 2010 ### PHP Developer @ Webta Jan 2004 – Jan 2008 | Ukraine ## Education ### Master's degree in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering Sevastopol State Technical University ## Contact & Social - LinkedIn: https://linkedin.com/in/maratkomarov --- Source: https://flows.cv/marat JSON Resume: https://flows.cv/marat/resume.json Last updated: 2026-04-11
