My teaching assignment includes a selection of courses from the following areas: graphic design, web design, interaction design, traditional print, typography, design technologies, front-end development, and brand identity. In 2014 I led Graphic Design Curriculum Committee as a chair. In the Typography course I introduce students to basics and anatomy of type paying strong attention to their understanding of design principles such as grid, alignment, and contrast. The discussed design principles are rather important not only in graphic design projects but are fundamental to the interaction design courses which students start studying in their junior and senior years. In Web/interactive Design courses I focused on two major areas: technical development and design processes. My academic background both in Computer Science and in Graphic Design made me especially qualified for developing syllabi for graphic design majors focusing on understanding web design technologies and development. One of my key goals was to help the department develop an up-to-date consistent approach delivering digital media courses both in Brookings and Sioux Falls campuses. Brand Identity Design course presented students with opportunities to learn the basics of logo design and define and apply chosen design strategies across brand applications. Here I also focused on developing a strong understanding of target audience and user research. In Design Technology course I taught students basic/ intermediate/advanced levels of current design tools (such as Adobe Creative Suite) through performing short in-class assignments and larger projects. ### Instructor of Interaction and Graphic Design @ South Dakota State University Jan 2011 – Jan 2013 | Brookings, SD During this appointment I have been teaching 4 undergraduate graphic and web design courses per semester. Courses included design technology and applications, typography, new and digital media, web design, interactive media, and front-end development. ### Web And Print Designer @ Iowa State University Study Abroad Center Jan 2009 – Jan 2011 | Ames, IA My core responsibilities included designing both print and digital experiences to promote the Study Abroad Center’s (SAC) activities and opportunities. I designed publications, posters, and brochures. Developed and managed the website. Formatted and prepared documents for printing press. I also worked on redesining the SAC website following the most up-to-date interaction design principles and guidelines. Through closely communicating with my colleagues (conducting stakeholder interviews) and also students (user interviews) I was able to identify the problems and key objectives for the website redesign. After stages of brainstorming, wireframing, and prototyping the design of the new website came to life and currently provides about 3 times higher traffic and 40% decrease of bounce rate. ### Graphic Designer @ Ames Laboratory Jan 2008 – Jan 2009 | Ames, IA During this internship I worked under a direct supervision of a senior graphic designer while creating variety of print materials such as marketing collaterals, brochures, posters, booklets, etc. Executed approved design directions for magazines and publications; operated regular and large format copy and printing equipment. ## Education ### Master of Fine Arts (M.F.A.) in Graphic Design Iowa State University ### Bachelor of Science - BS in Programming and Design of Multimedia Systems EUROPEAN REGIONAL ACADEMY ## Contact & Social - LinkedIn: https://linkedin.com/in/mariam-melkumyan-7395305 - Portfolio: http://mariam-m.com/ --- Source: https://flows.cv/mariammelkumyan JSON Resume: https://flows.cv/mariammelkumyan/resume.json Last updated: 2026-04-13
