Web site http://www.yap.tv. As the CTO I was in charge of selecting the whole technology stack. My time was divided about 80% development and 20% management. In terms of stack/technology I spent my time 20% iOS, 60% Scala and 20% devops (Opscode). --iOS apps: yap.TV Guide, USA Anywhere, Yap Music-- I worked side by side with the other technical co-founder to develop the first versions of yap.TV Guide in Objective C for iOS 3. My specific responsibilities were: user login flows, download, store and displaying tweets, xmpp real time layer for group chat and presence notification. custom data store mapping to the format of the data (packets of tweets) with meta data stored in Sqlite3 (initial implementation in CoreData). Over the following 3 years the applications were featured multiple times on the AppStore, most recently the Yap Music app was featured in the week ending on June 6th 2013. --Api server: back end side of the application-- I wrote the initial versions of the api server in Ruby (Ruby on Rails and Sinatra) Due to code rot and performance issue we re-implemented it in Scala (Spray.io, Akka 2. The data store is a combination of MySQL, Mongodb and DynamoDB with caching in Memcache. The platform integrates an xmpp server (Ejabberd) ---Social streaming: twitter and facebook import--- Initial Ruby implementation peaked at 6000 tweets/min with the data in the application falling behind real time with up to one hour. We reimplemented in Scala and the new version handles up to 12000 tweets/min without real time delays. http://mashable.com/2011/05/25/american-idol-winner-2/ --Devops-- I was deploying with Opscode Chef on Amazon Web Services (ELB, EC2, EBS, SQS, S3). I used Zookeeper, Nagios and Ganglia in addition to AWS monitoring in order monitor the health of the platform. ### Software Engineer/CEO @ De-co-de Software, Inc Jan 2006 – Jan 2010 A wide range of projects from Desktop apps to Enterprise level web sites using java, ruby on rails and other scripting (php, python). Partners and (former) clients include: Pizzahut Inc, Landfrog, Quimbik, Software Anywhere, Jacent Technologies. My most recent project is a one year, one man project on which I did everything from cutting html, javascript, backend, database design, implementation, monitoring, recovery. The system is deployed on Amazon Web Services using EC2 servers (between 2 and 14 instances), ELB, RDS. The technology used is Ruby On Rails, jQuery, MySql, AMQP. ### Software Architect/Engineer @ Jacent Technologies Jan 2006 – Jan 2006 I worked on the core team to develop the OrderStream Live Agent applications. This is a Java Swing UI application deployed over Java Web Start to agents accross the United States (www.liveops.com) and in traditional callcenters. I was one of the key engineers working on the 3 tier architecture (web services, application, database) using Spring Remoting (RMI over Http Invoker) for remote access. I initiated and worked on the first iterations of the Partners site that allows programmatic interaction over a simplified protocol. The code is developped with Java 1.5 using technologies as Spring, Hibernate, Mysql, JBoss. It is taking over 30k Pizza orders during the busy nights. I have worked on all the tiers including Swing, Dojo+DWR+Struts, Hibernate, and Mysql. ### Software Architect/Engineer @ Jacent Technologies Jan 2002 – Jan 2005 I was in charge of the VoiceXML/VOIP gateway. - I researched various telephony card/devices for our hardware platform and evaluated noise, echo cancellation, frequency response stability of the drivers. MSVC, - Integrated the selected card (Pika Tech) in the VXML gateway. - Integrated various Speech Recognition engines (OSR, DynaSpeak). - I customized windows NT embedded for the Integrated Voice Appliance (IVA) and designed the production process for replicating the OS image on multiple HDs (with a linux based PXE server). - Co designed JaNE, the distributed management network for IVAs. Java, MySQL, HTML, HTTPS, shell scripting. - I implemented SYSMODE, a mini linux partition to save/restore the HD image in the field. I extended grub to allow the user control over the boot process from our LCD screen (2 lines LCD, 4 buttons). Implemented an installation process to ship and install SYSMODE on over 100 live systems. Linux, Knoppix, GRUB. - Ported the VoiceGateway to Linux. ### Senior Software Engineer @ ICommerce Jan 2000 – Jan 2002 I worked on inSite, a hosted version of the ShopZone product targeting Telcos, ISPs and Portals. My role included both developing new functionality and working with our parteners (Earthlink, HP, Sprint) on performance, automatic account provisioning, upgrades of thousands of accounts, supporting failover configurations. As part of the performance improvement I worked on WebcD, a persistent, multithreaded server hosting the WebC language processor. Also I worked on the database interface to Oracle. [iCommerce was another name for Breakthrough Software] ### Software Engineer @ Breakthrough Software Jan 1998 – Jan 2000 I worked on the design and implementation of various modules in the ShopZone Win32 UI application (MFC,TCP/IP). ShopZone allows customers to build commerce web sites that in 1998 won 4.5 out of 5 stars in the Electronic Commerce Guide at Internet.com. Later I became in charge of the WebC interpreter, the backend that implements the server side commerce features (html processing, database, cookie management). Over successive versions I added language features (functions, structures) and various modules (credit card encryption, payment gateway interfaces). I was also responsible for porting and cross compiling WebC to various architectures (Win32, Linux, Solaris, Aix, SGI, HPUX). ### Software Engineer @ Internet Business Breakthrough Jan 1997 – Jan 1998 Software Engineer working intially on the Publish Module of ShopZone. Also in charge of the release process. [this company changed it's identity to Breakthrough Software] ### Software Engineer, co-founder @ Electrocardiognosis Jan 1993 – Jan 1997 Co-founded this company to develop a portable electrocardiograph (Holter). Was responsible for the firmware inside the embedded device, Linux drivers for a custom serial board and part of the display library (Linux, X11, MSDOS). I cooperated with the regulatory department of the Ministry of Health in Bucharest Romania, to get our device approved for medical usage. I worked directly with clients to deploy turn key systems consisting of PCs and Holter devices. http://ecgnosis.corlan.net/ ## Education ### MS in Electronics University POLITEHNICA of Bucharest ### 6 Months research into 3D simulation in Semiconductor device simulation Trinity College Dublin ## Contact & Social - LinkedIn: https://linkedin.com/in/mseritan --- Source: https://flows.cv/mariusseritan JSON Resume: https://flows.cv/mariusseritan/resume.json Last updated: 2026-04-12
