# Matthew Davis > Staff Software Engineer at Populus Location: San Francisco Bay Area, United States Profile: https://flows.cv/matthewdavis1 I love Python, data puzzles, and software problems looking for creative solutions. I'm most passionate, committed, and energetic when my work helps others. I have a broad range of experience from web applications to scientific applications to data analysis. I enjoy working on teams to produce maintainable, well tested code. I love helping people solve problems, learn new skills, and generally making their lives easier. ## Work Experience ### Staff Software Engineer @ Populus Jan 2019 – Present | San Francisco Bay Area I was Populus' first senior engineering hire, brought on to up-skill the team and institute best practices like testing, code review, and good security. I now lead the engineering team at Populus, with a personal focus on our back end. I oversee our back end APIs and data processing. We have a modern Python API built with FastAPI, Pydantic, and SQLAlchemy. Our data processing platform uses Airflow (running in GCP) to manage thousands of daily tasks. Our data processing heavily uses Pandas and SQL, including the geospatial extensions GeoPandas and PostGIS. ### Senior Software Engineer @ Clover Health Jan 2015 – Jan 2019 | San Francisco Bay Area I worked on Clover's data platform, including our Airflow deployment, Postgres databases, developer tooling, and data pipelines. My work focused on helping Clover's employees have the data and tools they need to do their jobs effectively. We used Python and SQL extensively, in particular tools like Django, Airflow, SQLAlchemy, and Postgres. In my time at Clover I was a team lead (for data infrastructure) and frequent tech lead on projects. I also mentored junior and mid-career engineers. ### Senior Software Engineer @ Autodesk Jan 2015 – Jan 2015 | San Francisco, California, United States I led the design and development of several Python libraries used in an urban planning consulting business. The libraries include statistical modeling of real estate markets, data workflow orchestration, travel modeling, and synthesizing realistic populations based on Census data. We used much of the scientific Python stack including Pandas, NumPy, SciPy, and statsmodels. I made sure our software was well tested using TravisCI, built cross-platform releases so our customers could install our software, and wrote documentation of our software. ### Senior Software Engineer @ Synthicity (acquired by Autodesk) Jan 2014 – Jan 2015 | Berkeley, CA I led the design and development of several Python libraries used in an urban planning consulting business. The libraries include statistical modeling of real estate markets, data workflow orchestration, travel modeling, and synthesizing realistic populations based on Census data. We used much of the scientific Python stack including Pandas, NumPy, SciPy, and statsmodels. I made sure our software was well testing using TravisCI, built cross-platform releases so our customers could install our software, and wrote documentation of our software. ### Full Stack Engineer @ DataPad Jan 2013 – Jan 2014 I performed work across all levels of an HTML5 web application focused on data analytics, visualization, and collaboration: - Maintained and enhanced multi-host Python backend interfacing with MongoDB and custom data management and analytics libraries - Built responsive, asynchronous client components using CoffeeScript, AngularJS, SASS, and semantic HTML5 ### Software Engineer @ Space Telescope Science Institute Jan 2011 – Jan 2013 I worked in the Science Software Branch of STSCI where I developed software products that process Hubble Space Telescope data for scientific use. I worked primarily with Python and C making heavy use of the scientific Python stack. ### Scientific Programmer @ Science Systems and Applications, Inc Jan 2008 – Jan 2011 Develop software for visualization and processing of Earth science data in a variety of formats, administer a remote web server, and perform scientific analysis. ### Astronomy Laboratory Lecturer @ Community College of Baltimore County Jan 2009 – Jan 2010 Teach Astronomy 102 evening laboratory during Spring and Fall semesters ## Education ### Astronomy University of Washington ### MS in Astronomy San Diego State University ### BS in Aerospace Engineering California Polytechnic State University-San Luis Obispo ### Computer Science Udacity ## Contact & Social - LinkedIn: https://linkedin.com/in/jiffyclub - Portfolio: http://penandpants.com --- Source: https://flows.cv/matthewdavis1 JSON Resume: https://flows.cv/matthewdavis1/resume.json Last updated: 2026-04-12
