# Matthew Debski > Senior Staff Engineer / Area Tech Lead at Google LLC Location: Belmont, California, United States Profile: https://flows.cv/matthewdebski I am an engineering leader and manager. At Google, I led a team of managers and senior individual contributors on to build part of Google Maps Platform. We enable developers worldwide to build their products and services using Google's real-world solutions and location insights. As a manager, my team members appreciate how I work with them to identify growth opportunities for them and the team, nurture the team's psychological safety, and develop an aspirational vision and strategy. My peers and managers value my technical acumen and collaborative focus and that they can rely on me to get things done. Customers surely recognize my focus on quality and reliability in the products and services my team releases. I run full-stack teams, developing products end-to-end and from inception through launch and landing. These products include scalable backend services, SDK and front-end development, and pipeline development for logs analysis, metrics and dashboards for internal and external consumption. I've managed teams in large corporations (Sun Microsystems and Google) and startups (Skybox Imaging). I've provided technical leadership and oversight without management responsibility (as Technical Director at Pano Logic). As a technologist, I am a Generalist. I quickly gain the required expertise in the relevant problem domain, applying solid problem solving and research skills. My Masters thesis, work at EFI, Pano Logic, and Skybox Imaging required in-depth understanding of embedded programming. This work included adjusting assembly by hand of Texas Instruments DSPs, debugging hard real-time requirements of a low-level data bus, and writing Windows and Linux device drivers. At the other end of the spectrum, while at Google, Kealia, Sun Microsystems, and Skybox Imaging I've worked with distributed systems with both home-grown and industry-standard messaging protocols. At one point I swear I could use Wireshark without any packet translators and tell what the machines were telling each other (or, as was more often the case, weren't telling each other). ## Work Experience ### Senior Staff Software Engineer @ Google Jan 2024 – Present ### Senior Engineering Manager @ Google Jan 2021 – Jan 2024 | Mountain View, CA ### Software Engineer - TLM @ Google Jan 2014 – Jan 2021 | Mountain View, CA ### President @ SchoolForce, the Belmont-Redwood Shores Public School Foundation Jan 2025 – Present | Belmont, California, United States ### Secretary @ SchoolForce, the Belmont-Redwood Shores Public School Foundation Jan 2022 – Jan 2025 ### Certificated Flight Instructor @ West Valley Flying Club Jan 2011 – Jan 2020 | Palo Alto, CA Flight instruction for the Airplane Single Engine Land Private Certificate. Also conduct flight reviews, new member checkouts, and phases of the FAA WINGS program. ### Owner Representative, Board of Directors @ West Valley Flying Club Jan 2010 – Jan 2012 | Palo Alto, CA Elected by 950-member flying club as the airplane owner representative to the seven-member board of directors. The Board worked to restructure untenable club budget and operating procedures in place prior to 2008 financial collapse. Worked to hire a new General Manager and Chief Pilot. Election Officer for three club elections. ### Engineering Manager, Ground Software @ Skybox Imaging Jan 2013 – Jan 2014 | Mountain View, CA At Skybox Imaging, I led the team that builds the ground systems for controlling the satellite constellation. This includes the software at the remote ground stations for driving the antenna and radio hardware, the scheduling of the constellation and generating tasking for each satellite, and parsing and archiving both ground system and constellation telemetry. Skybox Imaging (Skybox) provides easy access to reliable, frequent high- resolution imagery and HD video of the Earth by combining the power of web technologies and a constellation of microsatellites. By operating the world's first coordinated microsatellite constellation, Skybox aims to empower commercial and government customers to make more informed, data-driven decisions that will improve the profitability of companies and the welfare of societies around the world. Founded in Silicon Valley in 2009, Skybox is backed by leading venture firms and comprised of internet and aerospace professionals. ### Sr Flight Software Engineer @ Skybox Imaging Jan 2010 – Jan 2013 | Mountain View, CA Prior to moving to a management position at Skybox Imaging, I worked on the Flight Software Team, writing embedded software that runs on the spacecraft flight computer. This included software for hard real-time control of the spacecraft data bus, the ability to load new flight software on the spacecraft, the imaging system high-level control software and several of the modules for collecting spacecraft telemetry. ### Software Engineer @ OptumSoft, Inc. Jan 2010 – Jan 2010 ### Technical Director @ Pano Logic Jan 2006 – Jan 2010 | Menlo Park, CA Working with a small team, architected, designed, and implemented all aspects of zero-client server software. As the first engineer on staff, laid foundation for core software. Worked with hardware team to develop techniques for low-network-bandwidth video rendering. Implementation, expanding, and debugging of reliable network protocol to satisfy unique system demands. Extensive investigation into improving perceived user experience. Implemented messaging protocols between distributed components. Development of two software clients, one in Java for testing and debugging product software, one in C++ as a product prototype . Work included experience with SOAP interfaces, Java development, Windows display driver interacting with GDI. Majority of work done in C++. ### Staff Engineer, Software @ Sun Microsystems, Inc. Jan 2004 – Jan 2006 | Palo Alto, CA Managed a team of six engineers to deliver the streaming aspects of a scalable video server. Design and review of features, from specification through testing. Establishment and management of priorities and schedule. Member of architecture team. Remained responsible for software development, as when at Kealia, Inc. which was purchased by Sun. Accountable for overall behavior, performance, testing, and management of streaming software. ### Member of Technical Staff @ Kealia, Inc. Jan 2002 – Jan 2004 | Palo Alto, CA Developed control software for a large-scale streaming video server. Instrumental in architecting control software for a video switch. Development and testing of caching algorithms. Software was part of a distributed suite of applications: managed interactions with other software on the control plane as well as real-time hardware constraints. Profiling and optimization of software to meet performance targets. Design and development of unit, module, and end-to-end tests. Work primarily in C++. ### Software Engineer @ Electronics For Imaging, Inc.
