# Matthew Halpern > Engineering @ Column Location: San Francisco, California, United States Profile: https://flows.cv/matthewhalpern ## Work Experience ### Software Engineer @ Column Jan 2022 – Present | San Francisco, California, United States ### Senior Software Engineer, Tech Lead @ Google Jan 2018 – Jan 2022 | San Francisco Bay Area Lead the development of a programmable business rules system that is responsible for controlling all aspects of payment processing within the Google Payments Platform. The rules engine is used by hundreds of developers across many teams and integrated into tens of services/systems. Responsible for correctness, safety, performance, resource efficiency, and developer velocity using the system. The system consists of a proprietary programming language, compiler, interpreter, client APIs, monitoring mechanisms, and rollout safeguards. Created multi-quarter/-year roadmaps that included quarterly OKR planning. Mentored other engineers who received promotions for their work. Conducted interviews and performed Java readability reviews. ### Blockchain Protocol Engineer, Tech Lead @ ConsenSys Jan 2017 – Jan 2018 | Brooklyn, NY Lead development of the Ethereum client now known as Hyperledger Besu from an empty repository to a fully functional network peer. Implemented the Ethereum state replication protocol including the the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM), Patricia Merkle Trie, storage layer, hard forks, and other aspects of block validation and synchronization. Reviewed design and implementations of the networking, synchronization algorithms, and RPC APIs. Scoped work as the development team grew to over 30 developers spread across the world. Participated in Ethereum Core Developer calls on behalf of ConsenSys. ### Ph.D. Software Engineering Intern @ Google Jan 2017 – Jan 2017 | San Francisco, California Designed, prototyped, and implemented portions of a new intelligent resource manager for the Chromium Web browser (e.g. Google Chrome). Created infrastructure for per-domain CPU profiling infrastructure and extracted insights from large-scale user studies. Also conducted code coverage experiments to inform future design decisions and motivate new Web platform APIs. ### Graduate Research Assistant @ The University of Texas at Austin Jan 2014 – Jan 2017 | Austin, Texas Area Member of what is now the Edge Computing Laboratory at Harvard University (https://edge.seas.harvard.edu/). ### Research Intern @ IBM T.J. Watson Research Center Jan 2015 – Jan 2015 | Yorktown Heights, NY Designed, developed, and evaluated a research prototype of a service cluster manager for machine learning-based cloud services. Closely collaborated with the Watson Developer Cloud team and the Speech research team. The cluster manager ensembles different service model versions together to to provide more accurate and responsive results than a single variant node on its own. The work was resulted in "One size does not fit all: Quantifying and exposing the accuracy-latency trade-off in machine learning cloud service apis via tolerance tiers" which was a best paper nominee at the 2019 IEEE International Symposium on Performance Analysis of Systems and Software. ### Software Development Intern @ Intel Corporation Jan 2014 – Jan 2014 | Austin, Texas Area Developed a cross-platform deterministic record and replay tool for Android devices that allowed user interactions recorded on one device to be replayed across a variety of other devices. The work was published as Mosaic: cross-platform user-interaction record and replay for the fragmented android ecosystem" in the 2015 IEEE International Symposium on Performance Analysis of Systems and Software. ### Architectural Research Intern @ Coherent Logix, Inc. Jan 2013 – Jan 2014 | Austin, Texas Area Developed and used experimental infrastructure and statistical analysis toolchain to conduct power-, thermal-, and energy-efficiency characterizations for a proprietary many-core processor. ### DSP Application Intern @ Coherent Logix, Inc. Jan 2012 – Jan 2013 | Austin, Texas Area Implemented DSP-based customer benchmarks and demos on many-core processors for the CTO. Assisted in developing an internal parallel programming framework for DSP algorithms. ### System Software Intern @ Coherent Logix, Inc. Jan 2011 – Jan 2012 | Austin, Texas Area Developed embedded Linux APIs to interface to a proprietary many-core processor architecture. Supported key customer demos, improved on-chip program loading by an order of magnitude, and created a framework for “hot swapping” running applications. ### Teaching Assistant @ The University of Texas at Austin Jan 2012 – Jan 2012 Microprocessor Applications and Interfacing for Prof. Jonathan Valvano and Prof. William Bard. Conducted lab sessions to provide students hands on experience designing, prototyping, and debugging embedded systems by developing interfaces using ARM Cortex-M microcontrollers. ### Tutor @ The University of Texas at Austin Jan 2008 – Jan 2011 Reinforce students’ understanding of programming, signal analysis, and circuit analysis. ### Enterprise Product Quality Intern @ Dell Jan 2011 – Jan 2011 | Austin, Texas Area Designed, coded, tested, and implemented a web-based defect tracking system on schedule. Helped meet requests by other groups for tool by creating custom interfaces, documentation, and training. ### Management Trainee Intern @ Enterprise Rent-A-Car Jan 2010 – Jan 2011 Attained Elite Salesman status for exceptional individual and branch sales performance. Awarded outstanding customer service commendation. ## Education ### Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Electrical and Computer Engineering The University of Texas at Austin ### Master of Science (M.S.) in Electrical and Computer Engineering The University of Texas at Austin ### Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Electrical and Computer Engineering The University of Texas at Austin ## Contact & Social - LinkedIn: https://linkedin.com/in/matthalp - Portfolio: http://matthewhalpern.com --- Source: https://flows.cv/matthewhalpern JSON Resume: https://flows.cv/matthewhalpern/resume.json Last updated: 2026-04-10
