# Matt Long > Making healthcare better at Medplum Location: San Francisco, California, United States Profile: https://flows.cv/mattlong Exercise is a big part of my life. I'm an avid member of the South End Rowing Club. Open water swimming in the chilly waters of the San Francisco Bay before the crack of dawn is one of my favorite pastimes! Nothing really compares to seeing a sunrise from the water with the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz, and the SF skyline as the backdrop. Running and trail running are also favorite sports of mine; so much beautiful (and hilly!) scenery to explore in the bay area! I also do the whole Peloton thing since cycling on roads with cars scares me. That being said, I make exceptions for the occasional Hawk Hill or Marin Loop ride. I used to brew beer quite a bit. A Deschutes Fresh Squeezed clone (which I lovingly called the Box View IPA) and a pecan cranberry porter were my best batches. These days, I leave the brewing to the experts and enjoy the fruits of their labor. ## Work Experience ### Founding Engineer @ Medplum Jan 2023 – Present | San Francisco, California, United States ### Senior Software Engineer @ Vanta Jan 2022 – Jan 2023 | San Francisco, California, United States ### Senior Product Engineer @ Y Combinator Jan 2017 – Jan 2022 | San Francisco, California, United States I was the lead product engineer that built and launched YC’s Work at a Startup platform, which has already helped 1,000+ people find jobs at YC startups! Work at a Startup is a free-to-use two sided marketplace where people looking for jobs at startups create a profile with info about what types of roles they are looking for. After that, you receive recommended job postings and can browse through the directory of all YC startups that are currently hiring. Reach out to founders directly for the ones you find interesting. Founders can also reach out to you if they think you’d be a good fit. Besides Work at a Startup, I worked on many parts of the rest of YC’s surprisingly large software footprint. A lot goes in to managing thousands of portfolio companies and a community of tens of thousands of founders. Not to mention the Herculean efforts it takes to process and review startup applications to YC and the carefully choreographed (and now fully virtual) Demo Day that helps thousands of investors connect with and invest in YC startups. ### Tech Lead @ PlanGrid Jan 2016 – Jan 2017 As Tech Lead of the infrastructure team, I helped set the roadmap to ensure PlanGrid’s systems could continue to scale with our rapidly growing customer base. I personally worked on various projects ranging from more efficient Postgres access patterns and the introduction of transactions to ensure data consistency to a framework to manage asynchronous task queues and processing. ### Staff Software Engineer @ Box Jan 2013 – Jan 2015 | Los Altos, CA I worked on integrating the Crocodoc document viewing technology as the default viewer for documents stored in Box. Aside from that, helped build and launch the Box View API; the spiritual successor of Crocodoc's document viewing and embedding API which was sold as standalone product from the main Box offering. As a Staff Engineer, I regularly conducted interviews for backend engineering candidates. ### Cofounder @ Crocodoc Jan 2010 – Jan 2015 | San Francisco, CA Crocodoc developed a proprietary process that converted PDFs, word docs, powerpoint decks, etc into HTML that could be embedded into web apps. After more than a few pivots, we found product/market fit by selling our document viewing technology as an API. We quickly went from zero revenue to profitability and started to experience all the nice-to-have problems around scaling up our service and infrastructure to handle to ever increasing load as new enterprise customers signed contracts. I focused on architecting and building out Crocodoc's backend/API, infrastructure, and managing our distributed computing systems to process and convert millions of documents per month to modern HTML versions that are cross-device and cross-browser friendly. Most documents were converted and ready for viewing within a few seconds which enabled some cool, near-realtime use cases and processes by our customers. Of course, as a cofounder, I wore many hats beyond that: product management, customer support, company vision, fundraising, hiring, evaluating and designing features and products, etc. Crocodoc was part of the Winter 2010 batch of Y Combinator. We were acquired by Box in early 2013 where we integrated our document preview technology into the core Box product and continued to iterate and improve on Crocodoc's standalone document viewing API which was rebranded as the Box View API. I worked at Box for a few years as a technical lead on the Box View team. ### Lead Developer @ WebNotes Jan 2008 – Jan 2010 | Cambridge, MA ### Software Developer @ Oracle Jan 2008 – Jan 2008 Software developer on the Business Intelligence (BIEE) team. Involves data-mining, providing ad hoc analytic capabilities, and data visualization. ## Education ### BS in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Massachusetts Institute of Technology ## Contact & Social - LinkedIn: https://linkedin.com/in/mateolargo - Website: http://crocodoc.com --- Source: https://flows.cv/mattlong JSON Resume: https://flows.cv/mattlong/resume.json Last updated: 2026-04-05
