# Michael Reiter > Senior AR/VR Software Engineer at Apple Location: San Francisco Bay Area, United States Profile: https://flows.cv/michaelreiter I'm a Senior Software Engineer with more than half a decade of professional experience working on cutting edge software for Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality. At Meta Reality Labs (formerly Oculus VR), for over 3 years I worked on Meta Horizon OS, the operating system for Quest headsets. Then I switched teams internally to work on Meta Orion AR glasses building holographic video calling experiences. In 2022 I joined Apple, where I've been working on visionOS, the spatial computing operating system for Apple Vision Pro. I hold a MS in Computer Science from Georgia Tech and a BS in Computer Science from the University of Victoria. My passions are in AR/VR, Computer Graphics and Artificial Intelligence. I have strong experience with systems and graphics programming using C++, native app development for visionOS and iOS using Objective-C, Swift and Metal, Android development using Java and Kotlin, and front-end web development using JavaScript (React, Redux, GraphQL). ## Work Experience ### Senior AR/VR Software Engineer @ Apple Jan 2022 – Present Working on visionOS for  Vision Pro • Building high performance low level systems using C++ • Architecting core frameworks using Swift and Objective-C • Rendering immersive spatial apps using Metal • Implementing delightful user interfaces using SwiftUI, UIKit, RealityKit and ARKit • Re-reading my linear algebra college textbook frequently ### Senior Software Engineer (IC5) @ Meta Jan 2021 – Jan 2022 | San Francisco Bay Area AR / Computer Graphics Engineer on the Holograms team • Developed early research implementation of Augmented Reality holographic video calling for Orion (Meta AR glasses prototype) • Implemented a multi-platform real-time renderer using C++ and GLSL shaders • Designed a shader cross-compilation system to target OpenGL, Vulkan and Metal graphics APIs • Wrote a highly parallelized image processing pipeline leveraging GPGPU technologies to perform novel computer vision techniques ### Senior Software Engineer (IC5) @ Meta Jan 2021 – Jan 2021 VR Engineer on the Oculus System Interfaces team • Developed system UIs for Meta Horizon OS (an Android-based Virtual Reality operating system) • Served as Tech Lead for the Universal Menu (taskbar) on Oculus Quest VR headsets. Coordinated development across a dozen engineers in multiple orgs. Performed memory profiling and optimizations to meet a strict budget. • Introduced Kotlin to Oculus, empowering hundreds of engineers to use modern Android technologies. De-risked memory utilization, app performance and internal tooling support, then deployed experimentally. Resulted in a statistically significant reduction in crashes. Delivered instructional presentation and onboarded other teams. • Led system UI/UX development for Horizon Home (VR social hub). Integrated with party chat and co-present multiplayer APIs. Advocated Android best practices, such as MVVM architecture and Jetpack Components. • Built VR Settings app with a strict least privilege security model using React Native and Java • Managed an intern. Developed a project plan, reviewed all code, and hosted regular 1:1s. Resulted in unanimous full-time hiring recommendations. • Conducted technical interviews, evaluating candidates on programming and behavioral axes ### Software Engineer (IC4) @ Meta Jan 2019 – Jan 2021 ### Software Engineer (IC3) @ Meta Jan 2018 – Jan 2019 ### Software Engineer Intern @ Microsoft Jan 2017 – Jan 2017 • Prototyped Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality experiences in Unity3D for Windows Mixed Reality headsets and Microsoft HoloLens • Developed a 3D UWP application for Windows 10 using C#, C++ and XAML ### Software Engineer Intern @ Facebook Jan 2017 – Jan 2017 • Implemented Picture in Picture video playback in the Facebook iOS app • Developed app logic and substantial user interfaces for Facebook Watch using Objective-C/C++ and Xcode • Produced several successful independent projects and worked in a team alongside full time engineers • Participated in the company Hackathon using open source technologies, such as ComponentKit and GraphQL ### Software Engineer Intern @ Benbria Jan 2016 – Jan 2016 • Full stack web development using React, Redux, JavaScript (ES6), CoffeeScript, Node.js, Express, Stylus, AWS S3, and MongoDB. • Developed a customer engagement web app for major food and hospitality industry clients (A&W, Applebee's and Holiday Inn). ### Software Engineer Intern @ ChatterHigh Jan 2015 – Jan 2015 • Developed a hybrid iOS/Android app using the Ionic framework. • Rebuilt mobile website using Bootstrap and Ruby on Rails resulting in up to 58% faster load times. • Independently designed mobile UI and wrote markup/stylesheets. ## Education ### Master of Science - MS in Computer Science Georgia Institute of Technology Jan 2020 – Jan 2023 ### Bachelor of Science - BS in Computer Science University of Victoria Jan 2014 – Jan 2018 ## Contact & Social - LinkedIn: https://linkedin.com/in/michaelalexanderreiter - Website: https://michaelreiter.github.io - GitHub: https://github.com/MichaelReiter - Website: https://michaelreiter.github.io/michael-reiter-resume.pdf --- Source: https://flows.cv/michaelreiter JSON Resume: https://flows.cv/michaelreiter/resume.json Last updated: 2026-03-22
