# Michael Storm > VP of Engineering Location: San Francisco, California, United States Profile: https://flows.cv/michaelstorm Founding engineer and distributed systems generalist passionate about cross-functional, product-oriented development. Seeking staff-level software development and technical leadership roles at green tech and AI startups. ## Work Experience ### Vice President of Engineering @ AptEdge Jan 2025 – Present | San Francisco Bay Area ### Principal Software Engineer @ AptEdge Jan 2023 – Jan 2025 ### Senior Software Engineer @ Cruise Jan 2019 – Jan 2022 | San Francisco Bay Area * Improved cloud resource utilization by 43% by designing and building an autoscaler for a work scheduling system across hundreds of thousands of instances. Due to extensible design, the autoscaler was adopted in multiple teams. * Saved 10% of total simulation cost by designing and implementing automatic work deduplication, after independently identifying the opportunity. * Evangelized saving simulation costs across orgs; created best practices guides for optimizing simulations internally; created system for surfacing performance metrics at scale and making them easily usable for end-users. ### Founding Engineer @ Grove Jan 2017 – Jan 2019 | San Francisco Bay Area * Founding engineering and technical lead on a small full-stack team building a personal finance web app with JavaScript/React, Python/Flask, and Postgres on AWS from post-seed to post-Series A funding. * Created scalable event sourcing-based data architecture with transactional integrity and full replay capability that enabled company to launch a wide range of features with a small engineering team. * Set engineering standards, onboarded and mentored junior developers, and worked across teams to drive company growth from zero to hundreds of complete financial plans delivered from Certified Financial Planners. ### Founder/CTO @ Aerovane Jan 2015 – Jan 2017 Founded and built a self-optimizing IaaS cloud platform distributed over AWS, Google Cloud Platform, and Microsoft Azure that achieves zero downtime by recovering from cloud outages. Implemented front-end with Angular.js and jQuery; implemented backend with Python/Django, Celery, and PostgreSQL. Followed lean startup methodology in working with external customers; made mistakes and learned from them. Couldn’t raise funding or capture enough interest; will probably open-source it. ### Founding Engineer @ CareerWave.me Jan 2015 – Jan 2017 Designed and implemented technology stack of a career coaching platform that utilizes client/coach interaction data, including natural language data, to improve coaching outcomes. Worked with founder to understand business goals and help him understand technical possibilities; defined product roadmap. Captured and interpreted client/coach interaction data with Mixpanel. Built learning platform with Ruby on Rails and jQuery. Built unified in-browser video and text chat, SMS, and email communications platform using OpenTok, Twilio, and Mailgun. ### Backend Architect @ Leeo Jan 2014 – Jan 2015 | Palo Alto, CA Led the backend team in the design and implementation of a cloud-based mobile/web backend for in-home alarm monitoring devices and apps. Internally: * Developed a scalable, reliable backend on a Ruby/Python/Postgres/Docker/PubNub/AWS stack that handled thousands of mobile and embedded device HTTP clients; integrated with Twilio, emergency calling databases, and a half-dozen other external services; and analyzed and modified audio recordings for human intelligibility. * Created tooling used company-wide for testing, debugging, user support, and business intelligence. * Defined Agile-ish software development practices from the ground up - code review, merge process, ticket management, testing standards, security reviews, etc. * Apportioned work between team members, set internal and external timelines, and worked directly with the product team on transforming user stories to engineering tasks. Externally: * Initiated and helped lead the development of a revamped project management process. * Evaluated prospective products and features for feasibility with respect to technical and international regulatory requirements. * Worked with marketing and community teams to launch and manage Wordpress, shopping, and community sites. * Worked with product team on feature roadmaps and UX challenges. ### Software Developer @ Cleversafe Jan 2012 – Jan 2014 | Chicago, IL Rebuilt client-side stack of a petabyte-sized distributed storage system in Python – including a multiplexing network protocol, bespoke authentication layer, and “CP” distributed consensus protocol. Created scalable Bittorrent interface for same involving predictive caching – talk on implementation submitted to SNIA conference. Instrumented major improvements to large-scale automated testing framework, including creating several internal Django and Sinatra apps. ### Software Engineer I @ CME Group Jan 2012 – Jan 2012 | Chicago, IL Implemented microsecond-latency market data dissemination over high-speed network links. Identified automated testing, deployments and monitoring as major organizational challenges, and was quickly given free reign to solve these issues. Wrote more than a half-dozen mostly-Java tools to address architectural challenges at CME, many of which were soon requested by outside teams and individual developers. ### Summer Intern - R&D @ CME Group Jan 2011 – Jan 2012 ## Education ### Bachelor's in Mathematical Computer Science w/ focus in Theory of Computation DePaul University ## Contact & Social - LinkedIn: https://linkedin.com/in/michael-storm --- Source: https://flows.cv/michaelstorm JSON Resume: https://flows.cv/michaelstorm/resume.json Last updated: 2026-03-30
