# Mike McGowan > Software Engineer, Singer-songwriter, reality TV gameshow loser Location: San Francisco Bay Area, United States Profile: https://flows.cv/mikemcgowan People tell me that I'm an enthusiastic and seasoned problem solver, that I bring energy to any team to which I belong. Still not totally sold on who I am? Let's walk through my typical day: Wake up and immediately resent past-Mike for not going to bed earlier. Hop in the shower and proceed to sing something from Ed Sheeran's discography (he's the homie). Throw on a V-neck and some jeans and head out to work. Smile at my lovely fellow public transportation users because I read somewhere that smiling at people can make their days better or whatever. Walk into work. Coffee and water. ASAP. Queue up the problems that I get to solve today. Think things through (what will I need to research? What can I do right now?). Start working. Hit some kind of an obstacle. Decide that food will help. Lunch. Something burrito-y, probably. Make coworkers laugh by saying something stupid and/or entertaining. Get back to work. Stumble onto a solution to my earlier problem that I wasn't seeing due to empty-stomach-induced-oversight. Ping pong. Get back home, grab my ukulele, and dive into a mini jam sesh with myself because I'm really cool. Binge on some old sitcom on Netflix. Go to bed too late because I'm sure I'll forgive myself. ## Work Experience ### Senior Software Engineer @ Pave Jan 2025 – Present | San Francisco Bay Area ### Senior Software Engineer @ Brilliant.org Jan 2023 – Jan 2024 | San Francisco Bay Area ### Senior Software Engineer @ Everlane Jan 2021 – Jan 2023 | San Francisco, California, United States ### Software Engineer @ Everlane Jan 2019 – Jan 2021 | San Francisco Bay Area ### Software Engineer @ Indiegogo Jan 2014 – Jan 2019 | San Francisco Bay Area My main focus is development of Indiegogo's web product, with a specialization in native mobile. My other main focus is making my coworkers laugh and/or hate me vis a vis excessive corny jokes. Can you really have two main focuses? The reasonable person in me says, "yes, of course." The mathematician in me says, "I think you mean foci." ### Android Developer Intern @ Indiegogo Jan 2014 – Jan 2014 Indiegogo offered me the incredible opportunity to rotate into a development position. I joined our Android team as an intern and started figuring out how to be a real developer. This is when and where I started to learn the fundamentals of paired programming, test driven development, and general code hygiene. ### Trust and Safety Analyst @ Indiegogo Jan 2014 – Jan 2014 Objectives & Responsibilities: Review campaigns and accounts flagged for potential fraud or other violations. Review high risk transactions and help reduce loss due to chargebacks. Communicate with campaign owners and contributors as needed to mitigate potential fraud risk. Help improve campaign review methodology and fraud-detection algorithms. Contribute to ongoing evolution of Indiegogo’s risk management policies & procedures. Provide ongoing product feedback to improve quality and efficiency of Indiegogo’s fraud management system. Gather baseline data (through database management tools such as SQL) in order to revamp current methods for detecting fraud. Analyze and maintain algorithms written in Python and Ruby. Develop in-house tools with Javascript, JQuery, and HTML/CSS Most importantly of all: perform above and beyond on the ping pong table. :) ### Production Assistant @ Rebel Unit Media Jan 2013 – Jan 2014 Standard role as a production assistant on live, commercial shoots. ### Intern @ Rebel Unit Media Jan 2013 – Jan 2013 70% Social Media: I maintain the company's presence on several social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc.) in an effort to get the word out. I follow relevant blogs and am constantly on the hunt for something interesting or useful to bring to our followers. 25% Production: I act as a Production Assistant on shoots when needed. I love this part of my job because I get to be a part of the whole shabang, which is fun! My duties have included things like data wrangling, acting as liaison between director, director of photography, and producer, getting lunch, taking notes, etc. When I have time, I've also been trying to learn animation in After Effects, but that's mostly just for fun. 5% Operations: I'll sometimes find myself running small, brief errands or doing some standard office stuff. Maybe it's updating office Google Docs, cataloging hard drives, or assisting with the archival process for inactive projects. It's kind of a mixed bag. You can visit our web site to get a picture of what we do: www.rebelunit.com ### Administrative Assistant @ National Writing Project Jan 2013 – Jan 2013 | Berkeley, CA I was responsible for assisting the National Programs and Site Development department of the NWP. I've had a lot of experience with general office protocol (filing, faxing, copying, scanning, emailing, scheduling, budgets, etc.), maintaining and tracking extensive Google Docs for event management, web site development, and other varied tasks. And I always made another pot of coffee if I took the last bit! ### Social Media Intern @ Lindsay Hunt Media Jan 2012 – Jan 2013 | Denver, CO I handled the day-to-day operations of a social media marketing brand. I was responsible for researching the products of our clients and developing marketing strategies to mobilize these products. ### Administrative Assistant @ Eaglecrest High school Jan 2010 – Jan 2011 I assisted the English department coordinator at my high school. My duties consisted mostly of standard office protocol, but I was frequently called upon for creative insight to his teaching methods. ## Education ### BS in Mathematics University of California, Berkeley ### Bachelor's Degree in Mathematics University of California, Berkeley ## Contact & Social - LinkedIn: https://linkedin.com/in/mikedmcgowan --- Source: https://flows.cv/mikemcgowan JSON Resume: https://flows.cv/mikemcgowan/resume.json Last updated: 2026-04-01
