I was choosing “safe” instead of what I needed, and it was crushing me. In October 2019, I made a decision that didn’t make sense on paper: I started retraining as a product designer while planning my wedding. Zero design experience. Burned out from teaching. About to get married. Then March 15, 2020. The pandemic hit. New marriage. Tiny apartment. Me, frantically learning Figma while taking on clients who weren’t even sure they could pay me. It was brutal, but I kept going. After a year and a half of building my design studio, I pivoted again: this time into a senior product design role at a startup. Then in September 2023, I got laid off. My daughter was 7 months old. The job market was one of the worst we’d seen in a decade. So I built a plan. I rewrote my resume five times. I tested what actually got callbacks. I cried. A lot. But I kept going.90 days later, I got hired. That experience fundamentally changed how I approach job searching and design.
